They cut the Air Quality Health index?

Hilarious considering they just released it to the public this week.

Care to back that up with some facts or are you too inebriated from celebrating another 1200 families losing a breadwinner?

- Specific programs in which funding was reduced include the Action Plan on Clean Water and the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan

- The specific programs that will be cut next year include Species at Risk
I would be worried that by cutting government funded science positions Canada will face another "brain drain". Although I can see the reason to save money but cutting funding to programs that are not necessary, perhaps it would be better to think long and hard about the repercussions on a local scale as a well as global scale. I would hate for the rest of the world (sans USA) to think that we are a science-hating regressive society.

As some have already pointed, care to back any of this up? Regardless of what you think about these people's positions entailed, they are still human beings and now are forced to find means of income in a pretty harsh economy.

I'm also a little surprised at how simple some people view this. Cutting 1200 government jobs doesn't just remove costs from government. Many of those funds reappear in the form of people being given severance pay, applying for social assistance, etc.

Again, not saying I disagree with the decision, but perhaps hold off on the sparklers and streamers.

Canada's government has been overloaded with beaurocrats for ever, the biggest monetary drain is our system is that we have a person and a half doing the job of one person.

the biggest drain on our health care system is that there are too many people on the butt end of the spear and not enough people on the sharp end of the spear.

While I feel sorry for the people losing their jobs, they are jobs that we can clearly survive without.

This should have happened about 5 years ago instead of increasing the size of the public work force, we should have been taking an axe to it.

Its a good first step.

Yuck - I do a lot of work related to both the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan and the Chemicals Management Plan (and think both are pretty important). Guess I'd better get door-knocking for new clients so I don't have to lay anyone off.

If you don't, expect HoOZ to be here cheering your firing and applauding your bad luck. Classiest CP'er I've seen in my time lurking or posting.

I think so - he posts an abrasive thread celebrating 1,200 of his coutnrymen being without work, I think my post is completely in keeping with the spirit of the thread, but I have toned it down, might have been a bit much

I'm on your side when it comes to having compassion for those that lost their jobs, but at the same time, I wonder what their severance package was like? I mean..when I got laid off it sucked, but I did come out with extra cash in the end

Celebrating their job loss? No. Celebrating the government cutting waste. So stop with the attacks directed at me.

AND....

Yes, I do think it is a good thing they lost their government jobs. I see it as an opportunity for them to become productive citizens, become gainfully employed (as I am sure their abilities will allow them quickly to do so) create wealth and pay their part.

Well Healed Bureaucrats?
1.6 billion dollars for 1200 people works out to be 133,000 dollars per person. How much is that in salary? Lets say half. $65,000. That is pretty nice chunk to live off of.

To dismiss all government employees in the way you have, is crass in the extreme. I often find people that hold such extreme views over any topic, tend to have a poor grasp of the issue they express views over.

I almost wish you could opt out of paying tax and subsequently receive no public services or assistance to see how long you last.

You can live off it, but if that is your family income or you are single, you will never own an average home in most big Canadian cities.

I disagree with you, especially when the government is as bloated as this one is.

The government should not be in the field of employing for employment numbers sake, it has an obligation to the taxpayers to be as efficient and lean as possible, just the same as a private company is obligated to its share holders.

It didn't help that the report came out this week of government employees spending their days viewing porn and spending hours on dating sites this week.

The government of any country is by its nature inefficient, and between unrealistic pension and benefit programs and a expected inefficient worker base these cuts have to happen, I would have hoped that they would be a bit deeper to be honest.
