Default Confirmed: Lucas is a Jerk

A special fan screening of the Star Wars films in New York has been cancelled after creator George Lucas threatened legal action over the event.

Organizer Mike DeVito tells the New York Post, "I've seen the Star Wars movies about 150 times but never in one long run together, and I thought it would be great to put something like this together for like-minded people... What bothers me most is that they waited until the last minute to notify us, so we couldn't get a chance to try working something out... It wasn't as if we were making money off it."

I am really trying to think of a WHY but all I come up with is that he couldn't profit from it. Considering the panning of his movies from an unknown critic is far more popular than his Prequel you'd think he would promote this type of thing.

You're trying to think of the why? Probably because it's a pretty obvious violation of the broadcast rights. You can't just put on public screenings of films without getting clearance from rights holders. There's obviously a profit element, but there's also a control element.

Lucas is doing them all a favour by not letting them watch those crap movies all at once. What a waste of 13 hours.

Were they charging admission? If not I don't see the problem.

Charging admission has nothing to do with it. You can't put on a public screening without permission.

@Valo403 - I agree with what you are saying. With only a snippet of information and the response from the organizer. I think he actually asked to have this put on and then organized everything and then with 2 days left was left with a big turd.

On the other hand he might have been a scammer that got shut down.

Any idea what is considered a public screening?

When 5 people come over to watch a movie am I breaking the law

Spielberg's worse -- only making the JP movies available on Blu-ray as a set when only the first one is worth watching or owning.

If that's the case he's got nobody to blame but himself, I mean it's not like he was putting on a showing of some C-list horror movies. Anyone with half a brain knows that Lucas is protective of his stuff, it's probably not a good idea to just go ahead and set something up without some sort of actual assurances from him/his company.

I doubt it was much of a scam, probably just got some beer specials and the owner of the bar probably wasn't complaining about having a full house, it seems more like one of those 'hey this would be cool, let's do it' ideas. If it happened under the radar nobody would have known, and Lucas wouldn't have been damaged, but it's not surprising that this was the result when it came to light.

I assume the bar was the venue due to everybody's parents saying no to hosting it in their basement.

IIRC, either the studio or Francis Ford Coppola did the same with the Godfather films; you could only buy them as a complete set despite the fact that nobody wants the third one.

I mean, I'm still tempted to get the set just for Jurassic Park. But $50 is expensive for one Blu-ray these days -- even if it comes with two coasters.

Never seen Godfather III and I never will.

Now if only I could find a way to erase Matrix 2 and 3 from my memory.

Is it dumb of me that I seriously want to know the answer to this question? What if I invited 50 friends to have a Star Wars marathon at my house?

Haha, yeah right, "Matrix 2 and 3."

There was only one Matrix movie.

They should have it anyways but invite comedians to stand in front and make fun of the movies while they are being shown. Fair use, criticism and commentary.

%&$# George Lucas.
