That's too bad. Some of my friends diss on the Stampede, and I simply don't invite them when I go.

I would like to interupt this argument to give you 10 reasons the Stampede is awesome:
1. Free pancakes
2. Cowgirls (or if you are Flames85 S*** and liars)
3. Eating 4000+ calories in one day on the grounds
4. Being socially acceptable to drink more by noon, then most people do all year
5. Fireworks
6. Long nights, early mornings and no one asking why you have a three-day beard in the office
7. Jeans at work for 10 days
8. Half-days at work, corporate parties and the rodeo
9. Singing in Nashville North to one of the 5 Country songs every single person know (western christmas carol?)
10. Slingshot/Zero-G/Drop of Fear
Bonus: That feeling you get knowing you survived another year and are now planning to detox for the rest of the month

If you dress up in cowboy attire during stampede yet don't listen to country music, don't live on a farm, don't normally wear cowboy boots/hat/etc....that makes you a poser. Works the same for being a hockey fan if you just cheer from april to june.

I didn't like Stampede much either (aside from the rodeo). . . and then I got a job downtown. Now I love Stampede!

Yes. We get it. You hate Stampede. Go enjoy your week without hitting the grounds and I'm sure we'll all get through this treacherous time.

I really don't understand how people can get all upset with Stampede.
Seriously, what other cities in the world just up and decide to have a 10 day city wide party once a year?
There's Carnival, Mardi Gras, Octoverfest, and probably a few others. Do you think people get up in arms because people in Rio don't dance in the streets the rest of the yar, or that people in New Orleans don't hang out in the French Quarter every other day, or that most people in Munich don't dress like sheep hearders and eat cheese soup the other 11 months of the year?
Probalby, but those people are killjoys who don't understand something very important, which is that all of these festivals are a chance for people to share in something.
It may not be a cultural activity that defines them for most of the year, but once a year, we get to get together and share in something that is rather important, and that is a celebration of the cultural roots of our city or region. It may not be a culture that everyone is specifically linked to, but we all have one thing in common, we live in a place, where at one time, that culture did affect everyone who was here, and in a very real way affected how and what the city has become.
Stampede, like other world class parties, festivals, cultural events, are a means for all of us to share/get a taste of the cultural roots of THIS CITY, and to have a little bit of fun while we're at it.
Sure some people are ###### bags about it, but who cares? Ignore the guys in tapout t-shirts (I do the other 355 days of the year and don't have any problem doing it when they're wearing cowboy hats either), and relax, you just might accidentially have a good time.
The reality of it though, is that I don't really care if people hate Stampede for some reason. I'm gonna have a hell of a good time with my friends at the chucks, rodeo, and probalby a bar or two, and I'll be wearing my boots and hat the whole time, cause damnit, it's just more fun that way.

Why? What is a negative about these people dressing up?
If you are an actual cowboy and you have a problem with these people dressing up then I would respect that opinion but if the real cowboys have no issue with it I don't see why you should.
Let's all remember that the Stampede is an event that is designed to celebrate Calgary's history and heritage. It would make no sense to host an event like that and only allow the real cowboys and cowgirls to join along.
I agree with you that the people who call Calgary a hick town and complain about Calgary's western aspects the rest of the year should not join in on the party. But the people who appreciate Calgary's history and welcome the western identity should enjoy themselves and take in the events that Calgary has to offer for those 10 days.
Should only people who have played hockey be able to wear hockey jerseys and cheer for their favourite team?

I better quit all my hockey beer league teams. It is unacceptable to pretend to be a hockey player 50 times per year. I am such a poser wearing my gear out there!

Anyone else get the feeling that F85 is just kind of using this Stampede rant as an excuse to point out that he's a better Flames fan than most people?

I don't think I've heard that term since the skateboarder kids called someone that when I was 12. Who gives a flying **** if people who wouldn't normally dress western, for fun dress western during Stampede?
I don't rape and pillage, so therefore I shouldn't wear a pirate costume for Halloween. I'm not Irish and don't normally drink Irish beer, so I should therefore stay home and wear blue on St. Patrick's Day.

I am intrigued and I want to know where such a strong hate for the Stampede and everything and everyone associated with it comes from.
Did you wife/girlfriend cheat on you with a cowboy during Stampede?
Really it is the only rationaly explaination for all of this hate.

But then he would be a Stampede Hater Poser
That could never be the case because he was adamant about how much he hates posers.
