Exactly. Travel the world and tell people you're from Calgary and you get one of three responses: 1. Where? 2. Olympics 3. Stampede.
But hey, let's do away with the one thing that has, and continues to, given our city global recognition. Brilliant plan he came up with there.

99% of Calgarians may not be cowboys, but Calgary was founded 100% by cowboys. It's our heritage. So suck it. Don't like it? Move. I for one think it's badass that our city has a such a kick-ass annual celebration of the western frontier. You got to be some kind of nut job with balls of steel to get on a bull, or pretty much participate in any of the rodeo sports.

Something I posted elsewhere in response to the question of why some people hate Stampede:
---------------------------------
There are a lot of reasons why some people absolutely hate the Stampede:
- Manifestation of "hick culture" and the view that it negatively impacts Calgary's reputation.
- Cost
- Animal activists
- An unfortunate number of people reveal their inner ######bag and skank
- Stampede fatigue
Personally, I think it is a tradition we should be proud of, and something that really differentiates us from cities like Toronto and Vancouver. While the CNE, PNE, Red River Ex, Klondike Days, etc. hit all of Canada's major cities, those festivals don't go beyond their exhibition grounds. In Calgary, the entire city takes a break from itself and just relaxes. Probably why we aren't nearly as stuffy and uptight as your average Torontonian.
I only go to the Stampede itself once every few years, but off the grounds, it is fun to go around town and see the western themed artwork on business doors, and the prevalence of free breakfasts and barbeques serve as a way for communities to intermingle and bring people closer together.
People come to Calgary to experience the cowboy culture. The Stampede is a primary driver of it. If we were to lose that, we would actually move closer to being just another city, hardly worthy of mention. The Stampede is one of the things that makes Calgary what it is, makes this city special, and draws people from elsewhere to us. We are recognized at an international level because of it.

Yes, yes it does. That's because we all get so hammered by the end of Stampede we've all forgotten what we decided on.

Unfortunately, there's always someone who believes that somehow a rodeo and western themed exhibition do not fit into the mold of 'New-Urbanism Utopia' and thus somehow the Stampede tarnishes Calgary's ambitions of ever being reconized as such.

Funny how everyone loves Calgary's tradition, but yet so many want to ditch the Queen as our head of state?

Celebrating your cities heritage is one thing. A reason to get drunk or laid because you wore a stupid cowboy hat is another. It's lame! Just another reason the ######bags with their afflicition t-shirts can go down to cowboys and hunt down some slut. Another reason the ceo's can have another day off work when they couldn't tell you the first thing about country life. It's artificial, maybe they should get heidi montage to be the parade marshall. Sorry but like someone said earlier, its the people that complain about hicktown all year, hate country music are the ones partaking in the celebrations.

Maybe if only the bar that people in affliction shirts go and hunt down sluts in is called something else? Maybe the day that the rich CEO takes off is called something else?
You're actually complaining about people being people now and not the Stampede specifically. Do you hate Halloween because people can dress and embrace the character of something they're not to get laid?
What would be 'authentic'?

I don't really agree with what you are saying here and think that the Stampede is an extremely important event for Calgary because it was designed to celebrate and remember our western heritage. A heritage that still plays a big part in the culture of Alberta.
I think the biggest issue that you have with the Stampede is that the actual event itself has lost some of its Western ideals and is now more about being a big drunken party then it is about celebrating Calgarys cowboy heritage.
I know that I personally wish that more empahsis was put on the Rodeo, Chuckwagon Races, hell even Nashville North as opposed to the Beer Gardens, Coke Stage, and what concert is coming to the Saddledome.
But I know that the Stampede has to promote these other events in order to draw more people in and have a bigger target demographic but I do think that the emphasis has strayed too far from the traditional Stampede aspects in the past couple years and that the board needs to recorrect that a little bit.

Personally I know a ton of people in my age group (I'm 23) who feel this way.
The reason they go is that everybody else is there partying for those 10 days and that is where you will find all the girls.
They throw on the cowboy hat and try to act the part because they think it will help them get laid but then complain the next day about how terrible the music was.

I really don't like MMA. If I wanted to watch greasy pigs humping in a cage, well I guess I'd become a pig-farmer!

The people that use Stampede as an excuse for this are the same people that use Saturday night as an excuse, or Friday night, or $3.00 highball night, or any "night". ######bags are ######bags and will act as such any time of year. Putting on a cowboy hat doesn't make them anymore of a ######bag than they already are.
