I would suggest having a chat with whoever is in charge of hiring or supervising the position, assuming you have some passing conection to them, or getting your currant manager to have the chat, assuming you have a good relationship with him/her, something along the lines of 'I know I'm not completely qualified for the position but was wondering if it would be worthwhile applying anyway'.

Also has the added bonus of pre checking for boss's kid, bit of skirt hes effing or some other inside track candidate for the post and opens up the 'what do I need to do to get on around here' conversation with management.

Just as an update... The support staff member got the position of branch manager over the person who was the assistant branch manager.

Should make for an interesting time at the ole office.

So question, if you were the assistant branch manager, what would you do now considering your one time subordinate is now your boss?

Or Branch Manager in a smaller volume location if it is a multi-location company.

Put in 2-3 years in the smaller location to learn the staff management aspect, and if they are successful, then they should move on to a larger location.

Seems to be the natural progression in our organization (Credit Union) for career minded folk.

If I was the assistant branch manager I would be asking our selection department what can be done to make myself a more attractive option for future selection.

If I was serious about moving forward in my career and there were no possibilities internally, I'd be looking externally. Most good companies don't begrudge anyone for bettering themselves, I would hope.

Sure. Obviously the route up the ladder depends a bit on the structure of the company. I do think it's odd to jump to places at one time though. Maybe compromising photos of someone were involved...

For some - applying for a job like this is a way of getting in a room with a superior with a chance to talk about one's career goals - even if you don't have a shot at the actual job.

Let's face it - getting and face time with one's boss can be tough - and trying to get them to spend some time talking with you about your long-term progression can be even tougher.

So you apply for a job - and get an interview - worst case you get 30 minutes to toot your own horn, talk about where you want to go and perhaps more importantly get some insight to how the organization views you.

At my last company I applied for a job I really wanted and feel I could have excelled at. I didn't get it - but the feedback I got from the company through that process clarified to me how the company saw me both short term and long-term.

That didn't match where I wanted to head - so I started the process of making a change and less than a year later I left the company. But that process started as a direct result of the feedback I got from the company during the interview process.
