Default IMPORTANT: Re-rates and next steps

OK folks,
The preliminary re-rates are out. I want to emphasize that these are preliminary.

This year we went with a 3rd party ratings package. We evaluated a number of options including doing it ourselves and concluded this was the best route.

However, we aren't entirely happy with them and realize some players are "out of wack". This is where you come in.

We need each of you to review your team. We want to get your input on ratings that are not accurate reflections of the players NHL performance.

The next step is for you to email (cphl1) a list of players that you think should be adjusted. Now - this is the key part. We expect you to be honest about it - and point out players that are rated too low AND too high. If we get a sense that you are trying to manipulate the situation - well - the ratings won't go your way.

We are looking for players that are not rated well within at least 2 or 3 points. Don't email us with a guy looking for a point jump. If, however, there is an individual attribute (e.g. a defensive dman with a really low DF rating and really high SC) we'd like to hear that as well.

Your email should include the list of players - with one or two lines about why the rating should be adjusted. DO NOT email us paragraphs - we won't read it. Give us one line about why the rating is out of whack.

The ratings can be viewed in 3 places (I apologize for formatting):

http://cphl.calgarypuck.com/pages/si...L1-Rerate_CPHL

http://cphl.calgarypuck.com/pages/si...HL1-Rerate_AHL

http://cphl.calgarypuck.com/pages/si...ate_Unassigned

The deadline for your re-rate submission is Friday by 11:59 MST. This is mandatory.

Other things
- I've updated the rosters (not including a wack of ECHL signings). There may be mistakes and at this point hold off from sending those through. It will happen later. But if you can't find a player in any of the above links to see their rating PM me the name.
- The ratings grids for UFA and RFAs may be adjusted still. That will happen after ratings are set.
- Next steps will be RFA resigning, UFA resigning and then UFA open market. The UFA open market likely won't happen until late July in part due to the fact that my vacation hits mid-July.

Questions?

It looks like a TON of emphasis was put on just last year. Do you still want us to take 3 years into consideration?

For Example: Malkin is at a 69OV because of his injury I assume yet Gomez stays at 69 because he is a veteran?

I have lots of guys on a smaller scale to Malkin who are younger like Stewart, Oshie, Fleishman who were all preforming pretty good but their seasons were hampered by injury...

Do you want to hear about that?

OK, will do. I will be honest but will take into account the last 3 years like we've always done.

Yup exactly - when I get submissions from teams we will be doing our own internal review of ratings - so don't be surprised if some of your other players get a tweek even if you didn't make note of them.

Thanks.

this is something i always have a problem with. Sure I have guys that I think may have got the one year treatment but when I look around the league for similar equal players I see why they got that rating. I can't say my guy deserves to be adjusted just because he's my player.

I have a hard time doing that

An addition: If your player didn't play last year in the NHL at all - and in particular if they played in Europe - they should be going down in ratings. If you see that they haven't - that's the type of thing we'd like to have pointed out.

So basically the league will still be doing their own ratings but are looking more input this year from GM's than in previous years?

I have noticed before that motivation does have an effect on OV, Is there a way to set everyones motivation at the same level in the off season so we are comparing apples to apples? The MO's are all over the map right now

We are using an existing ratings package as the foundation but will make adjustments to make them more realistic. And yes we are looking for input to see if it works. So far its been mixed - some GMs have been great at pointing out players too high and players too low. But its not something most our GMs have done so I'm sure some are struggling with it.

Which is why we'll be doing our own review and adjustments as well.

The main goal is to get a ratings package that is as strong as possible within a reasonable timeframe.

Boy that's a great point and thank you for catching it. I've changed all players so their MO's are all now 50.

This however doesn't have much impact on OVR. As an experiment I changed a player from 20 MO to 80 MO and their rating only went up 1 point. So for your reviews don't worry about the impact of MO.

But it is important that all players start at 50 - so I'm glad you brought it up.

Just one question: I notice that goalies are generally higher-rated than skaters. Should this be taken into consideration when I am looking at my players?

Thanks to GMs that have sent in their emails already. Even though the deadline is later this week - the earlier people get them in - the quicker we can finalize the ratings - as I'm tackling things are they come in.

So if you have time - get your email in sooner rather than later please.
