Default Paid Subscriptions

On another forum I visit, there is the option to become a Bronze/Silver/Gold member ($10/$20/$30 per year). The benefits are simply more storage space, and your user name is the colour of your registration level. Of course, it's completely optional and there are no restrictions for those who do not pay.

Has this ever been considered? I only bring it up because I've been on this forum for years and it's the place I most frequent. At this point, $10/year to chip in for a server upgrade/maintenance seems a no brainer.

Photon - Has the idea of putting an icon to this link on the right hand bar ever been thought of, perhaps between the Countdown Timer and the Weather? I am not sure how many people would have ever thought of going to just calgarypuck.com instead of directly bookmarking the forum....

We've tossed the idea of paid subscriptions around from time to time.

The risk is fracturing the userbase, people sometimes already differentiate between each other by post count or join date or team they cheer for. Having donors and identifying them has the risk of doing it as well.. "You don't even donate to the site, you're not a real fan". A low risk probably but still there.

Without getting into details, at this point we're in a good position with Vox and ivrnet.com so it's not something we'd probably do in the near future, but always something to keep in mind as we continue to grow.

Good suggestion for the donate link too.

I think I've suggested at least 10x that you should move the donate button over to the countdown timer.

I'll pay $10K a year if I can administer electric shocks to users, and to allow me to use bad words.

I donated a BUNCH of years back when there was a cry for a new server. I'm sure that was even a few server hosts ago. In fact, I recall it was run from someone's basement when I donated haha. What a geezer I've become.

I only donated 20 bucks or something, but considering the enjoyment I've gotten from CP I'd donate again and again. If a bunch of us donated 20 bucks, imagine what kind of pimped out place this would be.

But to make it a subscription? I don't think that's a good idea.

In the meantime (until I donate again...) thanks to those who run the site, pay for it, or arrange the ads to have it paid for. Without you, there'd be no CP!

Thumbs up

I second the motion of putting the donate link on the right-hand side bar.

Didn't the donate button appear on the right side in the past, or am I imagining things?

Either way, it's a good suggestion.

Here is the other issue. What if someone who subscribes is being a dink. Cayou still ban them? Would the terms of use have to be updated then?

I'll pay a lot of money if I'm allowed to take over other peoples accounts ala that stupid movie with Sandra Bullock in it.

Nope for the paid users Photon would show up at their house in his porche wearing a floor length fur coat. He would fling their money in their face and beat them with a styrofoam baseball bat.

Why not an option to not see ads on the site for a membership fee? This wouldn't be reflected anywhere on the user's profile to avoid fracturing the community. This would be useful for the especially annoying ads like today's Vistaprint and Beastly ads.

I would pay $50 a year for ad free CP.
