LED HDTV question
So I got a new tv, a 42" Vizio LED HDTV flat screen.
http://www.vizio.com/led-lcd-hdtvs/m421nv.html
The tv was stunning on display but now that I have it all hooked up some channels look blurry at times. Now I am using Digital cable but not High Definition. I was using a normal big boxy colour tube tv before and every channel looked clear so is this the effect of not having HDTV? Is my tv so advanced that without high definition some channels are going to look kind of grainy and weird? BTW this tv was the display model so I know that it looked awesome on the floor there but it was probably showing in high definition.

try changing your aspect ratio to 4:3 (ie you should have 2 black bars on the sides of the screen)
unfortunately with non HD channels, stretching it out will distort the image horribly.

Your TV is stretching the the small box to fit the large one. Of course it will look bad.

Ok, changing to a HD box. Kind of a waste if I don't.

As a Sports fan you will not regret this decision. The importance of having HD sports to watch in the comfort of your own home should not be understated.

Do you have an old fashioned TV antenna in your house? Hook it up to the TV and tune into HD ATV channel 21 for CBC in HD. You'll see the difference.

We have to remember that the SD specs were made for a 17" TV. Also the new HDTVs are not set up for SD broadcasts but you'll find that some TVs handle this better than others (although I'd never make a choice with this as a factor). With so much HD content now available, I rarely watch any SD content and I am even disappointed when Youtube or other streams are on lower resolutions.

Do TV's have digital tuners built in for OTA? If not this will only work until Aug 31st.

These days, I'd say almost all HDTVs do have a digital tuner. In the earlier days of HD, TVs were sold as HD ready or as an HD monitor and didn't have a HD tuner for OTA.
You probably won't find any CRTVs (old tube style) with a OTA digital tuner.

The other thing you should do to get the most out of your tv is to have the screen calibrated. Google your tv model and calibration and spend the two minutes tuning.

Here's a site that will tell you what channels are available in any area both now and pending, digital and or analog. Just type in your address.

Bought an HD cable box today. The difference is unreal! My tv runs at 120hz and is 1080p and the picture is almost too good. I guess I am so used to watching normal SD tv that it will take awhile to get used to. I cannot wait for the Flames to begin the season!

It's sad that I can't stand watching tv that's not in HD. My Panasonic plasma does great with non HD channels on Directv but it's not the same as HD. My LCD in the bedroom doesn't do so well with non hd channels.

Most people who get HD don't watch non HD channels anymore. It's just not worth the pain.

Things in the TV world sure have changed in the last 7 years or so when I got my first HDTV. Five years ago, I was thinking it would be nice to have a 14" CRT TV in my computer room. Six upgrades later and I have a 40" 3D TV stuffed in there while using a 32" as a monitor (I had to put it somewhere). I think it's time to back off on the upgrades for a while although it's nice that prices are always dropping.

2K displays are not far away so you will have to upgrade again soon, maybe a year...
