No chemical controls have been developed that specifically target dew worms, but to eliminate mounds of castings, spread gypsum (calcium sulphate) over the castings. When this harmless chemical is spread over the affected area, watered and allowed to dry, the clay will become crumbly. dew worms do not like abrasive soil materials, so consider topdressing your lawn with a course sand mixture after aerating your lawn.

many different species. European nightcrawlers are an invasive species that are pests and somewhat distructive. The good ones are red wigglers, good for aerating the soil and decomposing plant matter

Has anyone successfully "replaced" a lawn of kentucky blue grass with an ecolawn type grass? I am thinking of starting to overseed this fall with a fescue/rye mix. I much prefer the look of kentucky blue grass but it is so much work especially in Alberta.

My lawn looks pretty good but suffers at times from being south facing, high traffic and us having a big female dog. I have a corner lot without a sidewalk with a mailbox and people treat the street on the side of my house as the neighbourhood overflow parking so there's always people walking on it.

Any suggestions on a seed mix or am I just destined to spending most of my spring fixing fragile bluegrass?

Not dew worms, they leave your lawn extremely bumpy, I've also noticed the grass is really starting to thin lately to, whether that is the worms I don't know.

I see a lot of sites say that you should fertilize 4 times a year. A friend of mine told me he fertilized every 4 weeks, regardless of the weather. And he probably had the nicest lawn I have ever seen. Anyone else fertilize once a month instead of every 2 months?

if you don't mind getting down on your hands n' knees to get weeds, fill up a spray bottle with household vinegar and spray the root of the weed a few times. Kills it dead, won't harm the rest of the ground, and cheap as hell.

Few things work as advertised, but this is one of them. It's not, however, a chemical weed killer and involves a minimal amount of physical exertion. You're not going to want to do it over wide areas of grass either.

I second the fiskars it is absolutely awesome at getting out the weed by the root. One of the best yard related purchases I've made.

If you are going to use one of those mechanical weed pullers; make sure you put some grass seed in the hole afterwards.
