Upon some analysis:
Keep Irving, let Keetley go. Ortio takes Keetley's spot in Abbotsford.
Keep Pelech, if the price is right. Keep Mikkelson if the terms are right. Let Baldwin and Meyers go. Keep Stone and Cunning, let Carpentier, Chucko and Armstrong go.

His only deficiency from what I have seen is his skating and I think for the time being as an AHLer and maybe emergency recall for a couple games its worth holding onto him for another year

Yes, I am... Surely the same username had to give something away... But oddly enough, i have to say you're slightly less of an ass clown here. Though as your post above indicates, you really can't expect a leopard to change his spots too much.
But I suppose ditching a guy who's too slow for the ahl and has never lead a team in the ahl to anything resembling success IS a garbage idea because..
I dont know, because as on HF, you seem content to just be a tool for no reason rather than simply state a well-reasoned counterpoint. We're on the same side here dude, save the vitriol for the trolls, not for the flame fans who have the audacity to disagree with you.

To be fair, the AHL seems to be dominated by teams who hire lots of middling players like Jaffray, so leading entire teams to success isn't too important.
As for speed, I think he's a little like Regehr in this regard. His stride is definately a bit odd, but he's not terribly slow and would probably be near (if not slightly above) Sarich's level in speed, enough to be a bottom pairing D (about what his upside is at the moment)

Pelech is most definitely an asset and needed at the AHL level. There are a lot of young studs out to prove them selves and try taking advantage of some of the smaller players on the heat.
Pelech's presence keeps them honest or he makes them pay for their indiscretion.
He gives the young guy's the confidence to go out and do their job and know that they will be supported.
Plus he's just fun to watch and I don't think he was so far from making the team, back when Pardy did, if not for his injury then he may have made it.

Pelech has the best points per game percentage out of any current Flames D, hehe.

You must keep Irving. Armstrong and Baldwin also might turn into something so they wouldn't be wastes of contracts. The rest of them shouldn't be a part of the 50 contracts unless the spot won't be filled by anyone else and the Heat need a depth player.

You guys also forget that Pelech is still pretty young. He'll be just turning 24 when camp breaks this fall. Adam Pardy didn't crack the NHL until he was 24, either.

The issue with Pelech isn't just his age, but his total lack of progression at the AHL level. Pardy rapidly moved his way up the depth chart as a pro. Pelech has merely spun his wheels.
Add in his on-going injury issues and I'd be surprised if the Flames bother to offer him anything more than an AHL contract this year. I remember when Feaster was asked about Pelech at some point during the season and he sounded less than impressed.

Fair enough. Pelech has been at the "on the verge" step for quite a while. I think there's a chance where we might have a Chucko-esc experience and slowly dial down from a solid roster player (Chucko 3rd-4th liner, Pelech a shutdown D) to a borderline player to an AHLer.

From people I've spoken with, they LOVE him as a team guy. But he RARELY completes a full AHL season and, in part due to his injuries, he hasn't seen the kind of progression that they would expect from someone who's played 4 AHL seasons. (That's partly because he's only played 1.75 AHL seasons, but that's beside the point).

or maybe that is the point. that is the same reason a guy like Nystrom took a while to get to the NHL

And the difference in style of play between the NCAA and AHL/NHL, along with injuries, meant that Nystrom needed more time to find out what kind of player he could be at that level.

pelech has got to be resigned to at least a 2 way for another year. can't give up on him yet in my opinion.

I agree. One more year in the AHL and then it's decision time. And even then I would be cautious because I don't want Calgary investing too much in a player that should by all rights now be considered injury prone.

The other issue, what is Pelech's potential ceiling at this point? He will be 24-years old with 5 NHL games under his belt come OCT. Adam Pardy? Third pairing 6th-7th defender? Replacement level?
You can get those guys pretty easily off the waiver wire or in free agency. That's the other issue as well, of course: Pelech is now waiver eligible, so you risk losing him if you try to move him up and down between the AHL and NHL. The catch-22 with that is: if he isn't claimed, he probably wasn't worth keeping. If he excels, then he'll likely be claimed if he's called up.
At this point it's worth asking what the point of keeping him around is I think.

I really think his ceiling is bolded. He, in all likelihood, will become a tough 3rd pairing guy with a bit of enforcer to his game. I think he's pretty comparable to Ole-Kristian Tollefsen in terms of potential.

Mostly GM reputation (so they don't look like they're giving up too early), maybe some leadership for the farm team. He's not going to be an impact player on the Flames, but can still help out.

I am still hopeful Pelech progresses. I must say I was very disappointed with him at the last camp - but I do look forward to seeing what he does this camp.
He has the size to step into the NHL and be a very tough player to play against. I am hopeful either him or Breen have a great camp and push their way onto the 6th spot - I really do think we need to be a bit 'tougher' back there.

I think Nystrom was NHL ready in his 2nd pro season but the serious should injury cost him almost the full season as he did make the club after just 18 games on the farm in his 3rd pro season
