That's a lot of players. What percentage does a team usually get signed to contracts?

Usually of the top 20 rounds, you'll likely sign 80+%. However, it has happened in the past where they've signed every player they drafted (I think the Rios draft was the last time that happened)
High School players taken after the 15th round usually won't sign, and I know there's a couple in there. College players usually sign because they don't really have anywhere to go after.
I'd look for about 60% of the list to eventually get signed. The big ones are pretty much all the guys taken in the top 10 rounds.
AA added an additional rookie ball team this offseason (we now have 3), so it might be possible that even more guys get signed than that.

How the heck do you draft someone in the 50th round. Do teams actually know about all these kids?

Shane Farrell - 46th round
Jacob Wakamatsu - 48th round
Lots of stuff like that happens in the last few rounds. Also, there tends to be lots of Canadians who go late as teams have limited scouting resources in Canada and the players are generally pretty raw.

There's a lot more area scouts employed by an MLB team than an NHL team.
Stat databases I'm sure play a huge role. Teams try and find an anomaly during the year in the data and then send a scout out accordingly to get a firsthand view of his technique/mechanics.
There are third party scouting services out there too (much like the NHL) that are often guys who scout a small radius so they can see a lot more low quality games where hidden gems could be hiding.
Also, in small states (and Canada) there are generally elite level leagues where almost all the best players are playing. In a big state like Florida guys will just be spread out among the high schools, but in Montana or B.C. there's a super-league sort of thing where anyone with a shred of talent ends up playing.

the other issue with the Baseball draft is unlike any other league, teams cannot swap any of these picks to other teams. You can only add the supplemental picks. It would be much more interesting if swaps could occur.

The other aspect, is certain high profile players are not drafted as the Clubs can not afford to sign the player. Seems to be unique to Baseball
For example the Jays have a rumoured $20 million dollar budget for this draft. Other teams have no where near that amount.
Therefore AA drafted many high end / expensive players.

yup and...Euros, Japanese and other overseas players cannot be selected in this draft. They are bought, meaning rich teams like the Yanks and Red Sox usually get the best of them. In order for baseball to move into the 18th century these things need to change. A draft should be worldwide like Hockey or Football. It actually surprises me that they allow Canadians to be drafted.

Well after trading away arms like Hallady and Marcum in the past two years, you can see now that the Jays are going to struggle to finish out this year with their rotation. Romero is the only guy with a shred of consistancy. Morrow will probably finish the year with the team, but he's very AJ Burnett like where he has stuff, but lacks it upstairs to put it together. You can tell when he faces teams like the Red Sox and Yanks, who slap him around.
Hence why the team stocks up on arms at the draft. You can never have enough pitching, especially in their Division. When the Jays do decide to throw the chips in and go for it, I think trying to acquire another bonafide starter will be a priority.

Looks like McCoy might get another chance to pitch today. BoSox look like they might top the 16 runs they racked up yesterday.
Talk about torturing your opponents pitching in a series. You know it's bad when the only pitcher who didn't absolutely embarass your team was Jo Jo Reyes.

The Jays have apparently worked out a dollar figure with their first pick Tyler Beede in the 3 million dollar range.
Additionally, they have signed 40th round pick Nick Balligod, 42nd rounder Shane Davis, and 50th round pick Eric Brown.
In other news, 20th round pick Joel Seddon has apparently turned down a 1 million dollar offer, 800K more than slot. Why? Who knows.

Thanks Caged Great. A suggestion though. Can you leave the signed players in their original grouping and just identify them with bold/italics/"signed" like you do on first signing.
Not knowing anything about these prospects or their positions, it'd be nice to always see the big picture.
