Fake Transcripts?

I got forwarded this chain mail (usually don't read but I was bored okay!) and it was about fake transcripts.

So what keeps students from creating fake transcripts and entering a prestigious profession like Law or Medicine? I doubt Universities will call to check if everything on the transcript is correct. Are there better security measures in check?

I know it can't be that easy to make one, but there are some people out there with mad photoshop skills.

I have a friend whose career is based upon a fake degree. Ironically, he happens to know a heck of a lot about the field he got his fake degree in because it's his interest and he reads everything he can about it.

There are quite a lot of them going around though. Lots among expats.

We had a girl do this for a company I used to work for. She said she had a degree when really she had a 2 year technical diploma. We eventually found out and fired her. The stupid thing is that there were positions with her training available when she was hired.

I know a few people who don't make the distinction between a degree and a diploma, especially in engineering. When they find out there is a ring bearing engineer among them, they change their tune.

Lots of people teaching English in Asia have fake degrees.

I just read that article and wow, that scares the crap out of me! Imagine going to a fake doc for medical advice... I must be naive because I had never even thought about the possibility of this before.

Thanks for the heads up, I interview a lot of people at work, this is something I will be a bit more wary of in the future ;D

I don't know how accurate that is, becuase for most law, medical, dental schools, the schools actualy submit your transcripts to the other schools.

That's true, but couldn't you just send it through normal mail? How would they be able to distinguish one sent by you and through the school? Unless there's another form that's sent out

Typically it has the university seal on the envelope in Canadian universities. This is difficult to forge..

Just relying on memory from 2004, the UofC official transcripts are put in a protected fiber envelope with a seal. However, it was me who mailed it out to grad schools and universities, so I suppose people could forge the whole thing

I'm sure it can be done but I have no idea how you'd forge those fiber seal envelopes. The UofC ones would be tricky to forge IMO. Fortunately, most of the linked article was about completely made up schools so they probably didn't have to worry about that.

I never touched my official U of C transcripts before they were sent to law schools, it was directly from the U of C to the other institutions.

It depends on what you're applying for and where they're going. Sometimes they are automatically forwarded and sometimes it's up to the applicant. It is always in the sealed fiber envelope though.

I always wondered though. With those envelopes, how can the recipiant know that it wasn't previously opened? I know there is some sort of security measure, but wouldn't the evidence of prior opening be hidden by the envelope being opened officially?

This would probably explain how my doctor was able to have both his hands on my shoulders when he was performing a prostate exam on me.
