I suspect that there was some tampering going on. All the evidence is circumstantial though and nothing that I think Feaster could present to the NHL.

We definitely got burned by Sather... again. He probably still wasn't done laughing about the Kotalik deal either.

You do realize that scoring is almost exclusively on the powerplay now. When a player like backlund never see's the ice on the pp how is he supposed to produce? Playing 10 minutes a game (with 2-3 being pk minutes) alongside checkers or fighters does nothing to push a players offensive game.

Look at what happened to tanguay when keenan had him off the pp unit a few years ago. You expect a rookie to be able to put up 40 plus points as a checker? If he gets even a minute a game with the second unit i guarantee there would be a notable spike in his numbers.
I would have thought the he should be in the AHL would have been pretty clear on how I think he should have been handled.

Depends.

If the Canucks get bumped to the Pacific division, the Northwest division becomes the West's equivalent of the Southeast division. Which is actually a good thing as far as the Flames are concerned.

This is pure BS.

The Flames had a full year to know that Erixon wasn't going to sign. I will bet they had shopped him all over and the NYR came up with the best offer possible.... 2 2nds and a prospect is not something you have to offer when the Flames option in 30 minutes would be a 2nd pick.

The most the Rangers had to offer if they were the only team in play was a 2nd and a 3rd or 4th. The Flames would not turn down a free 3rd round pick on principle.

Runblad signed a full year ago

It isn't like the press were being held and he was all set to be a surprise top 5 pick.

David Runblad was his team mate on Skelleftea HC got drafted by St. L in 17th in the 2009 draft with Erixon going 23rd.

Runblad has been the better player throughout their careers on all the same teams. He had 50 pts to Erixons 24 in the SEL and was more prominent on both the WJC and the WC teams.

In the 2010 draft St. L traded him to Ottawa for a 16th pick overall.

There is absolutely no way that anyone gives the Flames a pick higher than 16 for Erixon.

Erixon wouldn't go in the top 10 this year.
I think NJ would have given him a long hard look at no 4. I'm not sure if they ultimately would have drafted him, but he's the kind of player they could use.

Carson and Pardy will be competing with each other for the 5th spot, unless Sarich is moved in which case it will be a competition for the 4th and 5th spot. If Brodie can demonstrate he belongs on the team, he'll be the 6th defenseman but with PP time (the role Babchuck played before). If Babchuck is signed, and Brodie plays well enough to make the team, then i'd expect one of Pardy and Carson to be traded or demoted assuming they are signed.
I don't think either Carson or Pardy was horrid last season, but I also would not call them "solid" and the team (IMO), needs to improve the backend over what we saw last year. I think having one of Pardy or Carson as a 6/7 guy is fine, but signing both and having one of them a #5 and the other potentially a #6 on the depth chart is a problem.

At the very least, I think Feaster needs to get past July 1st, see what other options are out there before inking these two guys. He needs to improve this team and re-signing almost everyone isnt the way to do that.

Tampering would be soo sweet. Didn't the devils lose their first round pick and stuff like that?

really you figure that he is better than Luke Schenn and Braydon Schenn who got picked 5th overall.

He has not even been the best 20 year old D-man on any team he has played on.

So he would be a keystone player to get Iginla from the Flames?? Really?

Pretty disappointed with the whole situation, the Flames have had a lot negative press for the last couple years whether it is all deserved or not is another argument the point is it is out there.

With the on ice product not being stellar the last little while and the cupboards lets face it are pretty bare, we need something good to happen and soon. To me i think we are teetering on a thread and it could go very bad before it gets any better. I hope not and remain hopeful but i cant shake this crappy feeling lately.

It wouldn't be the first time that Sather was accused of tampering.

I strongly believe that Erixon and his camp aren't the only ones that don't fancy what they have seen since the lockout as far as young prospects getting a legitimate shot with the Flames. That's not Jay Feaster's fault but it's something he's going to have to address and something Brent is going to have think about. We already know that he's one of the least popular coaches from that player vote earlier this year. It's possible that this is more of a Sutter problem than a Flames problem.

That said it appears that there may have been some back door negotiations with the Rangers and it's kind of disturbing how that Grossman and the Erixon's didn't let this out of the bag until very late in negotiations. No matter how you look at it the Flames got burned by the Rangers, Erixon and PuckAgency.

They have to forfeit one 1st between 2011-14, and a 3rd in 2011....but that wasn't for tampering, it was for trying to circumvent the salary cap.

.
The only way to fix the problem is to actually draft young players worthy of being given big roles. We haven't had too many of those in recent year.

I guess he decided to follow his father's footsteps and play for the Rangers. I hope he doesn't make the roster and if he does, matt cooke should give him a career ending concussion.

I agree about having one #5 and the other #6 is a problem as neither are great at moving the puck and every line should have at least one player above average at this. If Sarich was traded, I really do believe thet Carson could take his spot and probably be an improvement. I know not everyone agrees with me on that, but he's a mistake free kind of player, that's reasonably mobile (ie more mobile than Sarich and Pardy), and seems to play really well with Gio (who doesn't). He's an average, but not poor puck mover, but that's all he needs to be playing with a guy like Gio. You have to remember that Carson hardly played for the flames, but was billed as the reason that Carolina was able to get rid of an White and looked solid the last few games of the season.

Pardy's worse in almost every aspect than Carson IMO, but is good enough to play with a TJ Brodie on the bottom pair and have success. Brodie can move the puck well enough that they might work well together.

While I'm disappointed in the turn of events that Erixon and his family have orchestrated, I am pleased that Feaster was able to turn a negative into a positive.

My only concern is the fact that we lost a defensive prospect and didnt get one back. Getting some offence is nice, but I'd feel better about the deal if we had gotten a d-man back instead of one of those 2nd rd picks...

Well, they are draft picks after all, and could easily be used to draft a defenseman.

He's a guy that is solid two ways, can play in all situations, and can play right away. Since Luke Schenn and Braydon Schenn are not available in this draft, and they are likely looking for a Defenseman that can play sooner than later, the potential is there. I don't see any of the other top 8 or so teams taking him, but I think NJ might have. It's not about him being better than Luke Schenn or Braydon Schenn, it's about how he stacks up to other defensemen available in this draft. He's among the best in this draft and possibly the only one that can make a team that isn't blowing things up this year.

They did and he didn't want to play here for a variety of reasons including the Flames notoriety of not giving young players shots. Really this isn't news as posters have been complaining about this for years we just never realized that it was being viewed this way by agents and players to the extent it is.
