The people that own Pops South and North and Mojos bought it.
It is going to be Pops West now.
So it didn't really shut down just changed owners and they are doing some renos on the place but there will still be a bar there.

I haven't been to the Duke for years, sad to hear that it closed down. After doing some research I see that it is indeed becoming Pop's Pub West. Mojo's is owned by the same guy who owns Pop's Pubs. When I first moved to Lethbridge in '86, The Duke was a restaurant with a lounge. It was converted into a pub a couple of years later. I have a lot of good memories from that place. It was where I first realized that my wife and I were meant to be (she wasn't my wife at the time, obviously... we weren't even dating yet).

As a student the nightlife is pretty good. Lots of parties and the bars down there have more of a house party vibe since most of the patrons are students. The nightlife is comparable to Calgary.

I politely disagree. Lethbridge nightlife is no way comparable to Calgary, nor should it be expected to be. I am one to visit these nightclubs, and they are very 'meh' IMO. There is no dress code/cover charge, like at most Calgary clubs. But it does depend on what your into. If your musical intrests are 'country' or 'top40 /mainstream' then you will enjoy the nightlife. Suede was the best nightclub Lethbridge has had in the time I have lived here, but its gone.

I think the advantage that Lethbridge nightlife has is the fact that there is no cover and it's smaller. You show up to Essies and Studio and you know half the bar. Which when you're in school is awesome.

All bars are, since the students have all left the city.

Lol at Suede, boy was that ever a royal screw up of management, Let's offer free rides to our customers of our highly successful bar "ICE" to bolster the Suede traffic. On year later both closed down.
I may be aging myself here but back in the day the ONLY outstanding bar this place has ever had was Caddies. I remember having to line up to get into that place by 9.

wow, you guys have been awesome and there's been a bunch of great advice! Just if you're wondering I'm actually gonna be renting with two other friends, and I'm 17 (18 by the time I'm down there). Lethbridge sounds like a pretty good place to go to school.
Thanks again!

Yeah Essies and Caddies were the hot spots in my day.
+1 for living in Res, you will meet a ton of people. Will likely be a bit tough on your GPA though.
The University cabs used to be fun, especially the Halloween one. Women seem determined to wear as little as possible to that one.

Not to hijack the thread..., but what would you expect to pay for a two bedroom apartment on the westide of lethbridge? My sister and a friend are thinking of going for a grad program.

400-500 each; give or take a little from there based on amenities.
I was paying $395 for my share of a 2 bedroom which was directly across the street from the university. It all came to $420 once you added everything else like internet and cable.
The building was older, but I didn't care. I knew it wasn't permanent and the location couldn't be beat.

This spring we've traded all the wind for rain. There's absolutely no winning with the weather here.
