Iran’s telecommunications chief claims that, in two years time, all Iranians will be forced to use a internal, state-controlled (censored) Internet. He says about 60 percent of homes and business will be on the new Internet even sooner. The Islamic state sees it as a way to uphold Islamic moral values.
The switch will include a new operating system and a national search engine called YaHagh.

Iran just cut off internet access to its citizens and switched everyone to it's own government sponsored intranet. Is this the final blow to the green revolution? By preventing people from organizing quickly, it's going to be really hard for the opposition to get out from the Ayatollah's oppressive regime.
It's almost unbelievable that there are places on Earth that control the lives of people to this extent. None of us can even comprehend the frustrations that go on in the Middle East.
As for the topic at hand, I'm surprised more totalitarian regimes haven't cut themselves off from the Internet. Knowledge is power. The North Koreans haven't had an uprising because they don't know there is a better world out there.
Well Al Gore was even more hated by the right wing nutbars than Clinton or Obama. While Clinton and maybe to a lesser extent, Obama give lip service to leftest ideals, Gore was feared as the man who would implement them.
I feel for the Iranian people. The world often loses sight at the fact as a populous, they're quite normal, developed, and quite "westernized". Its their damned leadership (both the Supreme leader and the President) that is batsheet insane and gives the entire west the idea that the country is full of turban wearing suicide bombers hellbent on destruction; sure there likely are a large number of crazies in Iran too, but no different than any other country.

Isn't that the crux of it?
I think the Iranian people have been identified as highly educated and enlightened people, so they were targeted as a populous that could ignite a revolution to change the Iran that we know today.
Unfortunately we know how that went. Too many innocent people died and that oppressive regime still stands. This internet thing is just the latest in the regime's quest to purge any inkling of uprising.
So wait, we hate Iran because of Internet censorship, yet in North America governments are doing everything they can to pass, SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA to censor the internet. Its exactly the same idea!
