The US is just a sad place for human rights these days, and the saddest part is how commonly people want to make excuses for that.
Sorry, but that's an asinine statement. The US has it's share of issues, but it's head and shoulders above the vast majority of places in the world when it comes to human rights and a driving force behind the expansion of rights elsewhere.

Well, although I did not post that video my impression of it was that the protestors were trying to raise awareness of how heavy handed police can be with very little, or no provocation.

There are ways to challenge police authority and I would suggest in the "heat of the moment" is probably not the best.

Further, most people are ignorant of the law and the authorities police possess. The sheer number of threads on CP with anecdotal advice from sources without any legal background is evidence of this.

The fact of the matter is, if you attract police attention, you are, in all likelihood, "breaking the law".
Many police officers are ignorant of the law also, ...I think this thread is a pretty good indication of that.

I don't know the context behind this gif (so it may not be legit), but it seems like pretty excessive force regardless of the situation:

If I recall correctly, the young girl was drunk at school & attacked a teacher. Her Mum caught up with her at the mall, along with the police. She had a go at her Mum and then ignored the cop trying to talk to her and walked off. The cop had enough and put her down.
IMO, way to much force used, but apparently her Mum thought it was alright.....

This one is upsetting to see, but the guy was 100% innocent of any crime.

"Police have released surveillance video showing a sheriff's deputy slamming a man head first into a wall, leaving him in a coma. The 29-year-old had been pursued by deputies after a witness wrongly identified him as a suspect in an assault."

Not much of measuring stick, considering how poor most of the world is in comparison.

Compared to wealthy, western, industrialized countries, which really is the peer group for comparison, US ain't doing that hot.

It's like saying the US is much better than most of the world at baseball. Might be, but it's not a very interesting comparison now is it?

Not good unfortunately.....

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/114579679.html

"Harris suffered permanent brain and spinal damage in the May 2009 incident, and can no longer talk, walk or feed himself. Harris' doctors say he will need 24-hour care for the rest of his life."

"King County spokeswoman Christine Lange said the county agreed to pay $10 million to settle the case."

"County prosecutors declined to file charges against Paul, saying there was no legal basis for a criminal charge."

"Two witnesses say Harris seemed to be stopping and said, "I don't have anything, I didn't steal anything," just before he was hit by Paul, who weighed about 270 pounds, about 100 pounds more than Harris.
One deputy acknowledged on the witness stand that the deputies did not identify themselves to Harris before they started chasing him."

Typical cop BS.

Id hope the cop feels terrible for what happened, but why wouldnt there be a basis for a criminal charge?
Im sure lots of people that get charged for crimes feel sorry for what they did, but they still get charged.

Such garbage.

I know it's technically a Police hatefest thread; but I don't want to start a separate thread about how evil teachers are.

Here's a story about a teacher who had an orgy with five students - I can't believe teachers are still doing this kind of thing. Are you kids being taught by these monsters? Home schooling FTW!

Doesn't matter she was in a position of authority - typical of teachers these days though. Think they can do what they want with no consequence.

According to D&D wiki a Troll is usually Chaotic Evil. http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Troll

Chaotic Evil is defined as the "Destroyer" or "Demonic" alignment. Characters of this alignment tend to have no respect for rules, other people's lives, or anything but their own desires, which are typically selfish and cruel.

So my question to you Mikey is - WTF do you know about the law then?

What I find most incredible about this thread is how people are willing to paint all cops with the same brush based on these isolated incidences.

I realize that you guys have an agenda and are trying to support the theory that police abuse is far more prevalent then most are aware.

You do realize there are thousands of arrests daily in the US and Canada. And probably millions of police interactions as well. To select a few random videos and stories to try and support your agenda while ignoring those positive interactions is ignorant and undermines your anti-police agenda.

With the exception of the military, it is the only job in the world that one can be hunted and murdered simply because of the uniform worn.

Do cops screw up? Yep. Do they make poor decisions? Yep. Do they commit criminal acts intentionally or unintentionally? Yep. But the vast majority of time, despite everything and everyone working against them, they do a pretty damn good job.
