Default Moving to Canmore for the summer

Hi friends. I am an Alberta newb, especially west of Calgary, so this simple prairie boy is looking for some help or advice. Moving to Canmore for the summer to do some field work, I have a temporary research facility to bunk up in while I look for a place, but it is not a great long term housing situation.

I will be out there from June 1st to August 31st. Looking for a single bedroom/studio apartment/basement suite. I would rather steer clear of room mates, not really looking to bunk up with any strangers.

I will be working in the Kananaskis area, how feasible is it to commute from the North West end of Calgary every day? Looking at around a hour drive each way? I do have a possible room to rent in that area.. how much more driving would it be from the NW of Calgary to Kananaskis than from Canmore to K?

And lastly, where are the good fishing spots/mountain biking spots in this area? Pretty pumped, never been out there in the summer but I hear it is very nice.. and expensive, sweet.

What about staying in Cochrane? Not sure about short term rentals. That may be your biggest problem. Not many people want to only rent out for a couple of months at a time.

I lived in Banff one summer in the late 90s. Finding a place was next to impossible even then, so I bought an old 16' holiday trailer for $1000 and lived in that for a few months. It was awesome man - maybe worth considering.

This probably isn't a bad idea. Like Puxlut mentioned, renting for only 3 months will be hard to find.

Well I can help on the commute part, it takes me about an hour to get to Nakiska (ski hill) in Kananaskis from Mcknight/Center street doing 120-130ish and about 45 min from City Limits. If you do hte speed limit its 15 min or so slower.

from Canmore its about 30 min if I can recall correctly to Nakiska.
You're probably at that little government research base right by the dam on barrier lake so you can shave 10 mins of the drive to nakiska.

I have been doing some research and you guys are very right, finding a spot for just the summer is very tough.

I might have to re work this.. a lot of the work I can do from Stoon, I was just hoping to be able to spend my summer in the rockies instead of the wind for a change

The only viable option is getting a random room mate, but even then not many are looking for short term it seems.. and then I would have to face the facts I may end up with a Canucks fan and a murder charge.
