The same types of comments were being made around here last week as well...that it was a light year for tornados in this area. Things have obviously changed.

Well ok most of us are like that? However that was for humor.
A sad thing has just happened. The Hamil Family of Piedmont, OK has just found their missing 3 year old son. He was found dead in a pond close to their residence. Mr Hamil was away for business ( i believe) when the storms hit. So the pregnant mom and 3 kids were facing this tornado alone. Ryan had been missing since Tuesday. His 15 month old brother also passed in the tornado. The Mom and her pregnancy plus the daughter are safe but this is a tough tough loss to bear for them and for us Oklahomans . It always upsetting to lose people but to lose them so young is horrible. My heart goes out to this Oklahoman family. If your praying people I urge you to keep them in your prayers. If not just a moment of silence out of respect will do! http://www.kfor.com/news/local/kfor-...0,831235.story
-Mo Dept. of Public Safety have released there missing list and it stands at 232 people. They know that some people on that list are going to be deceased. I'm hoping that most of those missing have simply been out of contact. I fear that is not the case.
-witnessed searchers yesterday starting the search in various ponds along the path
-horses have been brought in today to begin searching fields in the area
-not often distinguished from Joplin is the village of Duquene right beside Joplin. 75% of the village has been destroyed.

That is so very sad. Condolances to the Hamil family for the loss of thier son. I can't imagine the horrible grief they must be feeling. Too young for a person to die
I have heard one good news story from the tornado in Joplin today.
JOPLIN - Two children and a father were found by a team of nurses who are touring through damage four days after an EF-5 tornado ripped through Joplin, killing more than 100 people. A 9-year-old and a 7 year-old were found with a parent inside a damaged house Thursday.

A little good news.. Still makes me
That is awesome news. Anytime you find someone still alive is something to be very thankful for. Hope they find some more.
Latest numbers are 139 dead, 44 on the missing list over a 1000 treated for injuries. At least one of the victims lost their life because of infection after surviving the tornado. Right now getting peoples wounds looked at, cultured and cleaned is a major effort in the medical community.
Identification of victims has slowed down because, to be blunt, they are no longer dealing with identifiable parts so DNA testing is required.
Can't find the exact number but from memory FEMA put the number of residences destroyed at over 6200 homes. Something like 2000 were not insured.
Many of the major businesses said they will be rebuilding already which is a good thing.

As some know, I work for the US Postal Service and I heard that there were two letter carriers that had recently transferred to Joplin from Waynesville (within the last couple of weeks) and that both were killed in the tornado.
That's third hand information at best, but if true it's a pretty sad story.

This young lady survived both the Tuscaloosa tornado and the Joplin tornado. A Joplin native who attends the University of Alabama. Crazy.

They were doing the 6th and final sweep of the debris today. Once finished the clean up will begin. I believe the National Guard will be in charge of organizing the clean up.
Home Depot opened up a lumber yard in their parking lot today and are hard at work building a temporary store nearby. Not sure pictures were posted but the Home Depot was demolished.
Springfiled, Mass and area got hit with two tornados today.
Massachusetts governor saying at least 4 killed in the tornados today. I expected that. It's not an area that is going to have any clue what to do and the warning system is likely poor. If one hits a populated area there is going to be trouble.
Just a crazy year for tornado deaths.
Joplin update: the missing list is currently down to 0 (that might change as there could be people not reported missing but are).
The tornado first touched down as an EF-0 at Wildwood Ranch west of Joplin. At that point, it had wind speeds of 65 to 85 mph. Multiple vortexes were rotating around the parent circulation. As it moved east along West 32nd Street, its power grew to an EF-1 with sustained winds of 86 to 110 mph. Its width grew to a quarter of a mile.
From Iron Gates Road east to Schifferdecker Avenue, the tornado ripped the roofs off well-built homes. Some homes were destroyed. Some of the damage was rated as EF-2 to the low end of EF-3. Winds speeds were from 111 to 136 mph.
200 MPH
As the tornado crossed Schifferdecker Avenue south of Sunset Drive, it widened and increased in intensity. The forward speed of the tornado through most of Joplin was less than 10 mph. It was at that point that the tornado reached wind speeds at the low end of EF-5 — about 200 mph. Vehicles were tossed from parking lots. Concrete walls were toppled.
By the time it moved to 26th Street and McClelland Boulevard, the tornado was causing damage at the low end of EF-5. Concrete parking stops, weighing 200 to 300 pounds and rebarred into the asphalt, were lifted and tossed several yards.
The tornado would cause EF-3 to EF-5 damage from there to an area just east of Range Line Road.

Some sad news. A Joplin police officer involved with the initial search and rescues and was struck by lightning died today from the injuries. Also had a neighbour who had blood pressure issues and lost his business in the tornado pass away leaving behind a young family.
