I saw the sign for the Edmonton "Up!" station on my way home yesterday and chuckled... then I got to Calgary and saw Mix had changed (yet again) to match. Near as I can tell, it is just Lite 96 with horribly crappy music.
And has there ever been a station in this city that modified formats as frequently as 97.7?

I scrolled thru all the channels on my Sirius and was unable to find anything called Up or Mix - what channel number is this on?

The management there is such a disaster. Has been for every lame ass format they've tried. I wish them nothing but misery for their absolute inability to understand how to run a radio station. There are massive genre gaps on the airwaves here, and they missed entirely... Again.

I see they've discovered 3D word art for their new logo though. Looks just awesome.

They'll run through their entire catalogue within a month - tops.
Silly idea.

I suppose that this is a sign of the times in radio. AM talk stations seem to do well as they have a nicely carved niche (sports, talk, politics, news, etc.). Music stations are caught in that conundrum of having to reinvent themselves every so often to prevent fading into obscurity. And this usually involves clearing out some good people just because things need freshening up.
That mirrors my personal listening habits. I'll usually only go to terrestrial radio for hockey games or if I'm wondering what my particular traffic jam is all about.

Is there any place that keeps track of format changes? You're right, this station has had a bunch.
Love 'em or hate 'em, CJAY and Coutry 105 seem like the only ones to stick to their format.

I worked at this station for a year, and the mgmt is sooo out of touch with reality. They have no idea what the public wants.
ugh....I KINDA wish them luck. Kinda hope it fails.

Ownership too. Someone should remind the two brothers that Calgary is much more difficult to program than Prince Albert an North Battleford.

This is a tough way to make a living! Feel bad for everyone let go including Beesley and Sue Deyell. I'm sure both of them will get picked up by someone in the next couple months.
The real head scratcher is the guy who they hired to work from 9am-3pm. A station who is going after the "office music" crowd hired a guy who looks like he'd sell you crack or a hooker at the c-train station. http://www.facebook.com/ara.andonian

Now, I work in radio in Edmonton and I'm a huge Flames fan... The last thing I did when I was new up here was flaunt my love of "that other" team. He'd probably be smart to hide that he's a fan of the "green men" as well keep the tweets about his gigantic Canucks boner to a minimum...at least for a year or so. Seems like good P.R. doesn't it?

I was going to mention this, after looking through his Facebook page and reading his tweet. What a ######.
I hope this station burns to the ground.
Management: "Here's a great idea! Let's get a die-hard Canucks fan to be a DJ at our CALGARY radio station. No one will mind that."
Idiots.

Only listened to the new station once so far and I felt that they were playing almost the same selections as MIX 97.7. I don't mind the music selections, i just hope I don't have to listen that freaking SPENCE DIAMOND commercial every 10 minutes like 103 station does. Too bad you can't just complain to the station about it because they'll just tell you they are making money from Spence.

Check out pugetsoundradio.com and radiowest.ca if you're into the radio gossip. Lots of bitter old souls on both forums!

I just realized this morning that someone down the street from me lost their job on Friday because of this change. I wonder what the severance package must be like for the on-air personalities that get the boot. It must be quite generous for stations to get away with these clean sweeps every time they decide to change formats.

It depends on the contract...few people outside of Mornings and some afternoon drive hosts have term contracts in radio. Severance from what I've heard and looked for is typically double what the government mandates. It's nothing spectacular.
But again, everyone who works in radio has been warned and knows the perils of the job. Job security sucks and very few people are safe from the chopping block!
