Default Speaker Repair

I have a pair of tower speakers that have been sitting in a box for about 5 years. I'm looking to get them back up and running again.

I think (based on some research online) that the problem is the tweeters are blown. I'm hoping I can simply replace the tweeters and they will be operational again.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is there a place in town where I can go buy some replacement tweeters? I've checked online but don't want to get the wrong parts.

The speakers are Sound Dynamics Reference Series - probably about 15 years old now. Great speakers until the tweeter problem happened. Right now the only noise coming from them is lows and mids -- there are no sharper high end sounds.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago with some blown woofers on an older set of speakers. After getting a quote for replacement parts, it didn't make any sense to have them repaired. Can't remember where I had them looked at though. I'll see if I still have the quote somewhere around here.

Good luck!

Yeah thats the thing. I've seen tweeters online ranging from $20 to $100. If I need the expensive ones it doesn't even make sense to replace them, I might as well buy new speakers. And I'm not totally sure if the cheaper ones are right for these speakers.

I only want to do it if it costs me little and I can do a simple swap of the older tweeters with new ones. It would seem like a waste not to fix them though, the speakers are great looking as furniture and I wouldn't know where to get rid of non-functional speakers of this size.

These guys were great to deal with: http://www.loudspeakers.ca/

I used them to get some speakers to refurb an old guitar amp, but they also carry a lot of general purpose hi-fi speakers
