I'm not going to get into a big debate about this because I do feel for those families and it would suck to be in their situation but there was nothing stopping any of those people from buying insurance, this is why we buy it. If the government is just going to bail us out then why get it?
There are many other reasons why it sends a bad message and can cause problems for those who actually thought to protect their property. I truly do feel for them and I hope friends, family, strangers, etc. can help others out but it should not be the governments job to aid us when we have the chance to protect ourselves. It's not like it was a mysterious earthquake hitting Alberta, it was a wild fire that happens probably once or twice a year up there.

Due to a municipal problem with their drainage system?

Condos have insurance in the condo fees, houses are different as it's up to the individual owners.
The condo owners in the Millrise fire would only need to get additional coverage for their content.

Right... and the municipal system was unable to keep up with what it was originally designed to do, probably due to old age?

Bit of a different situation because while people could have no content insurance, the building itself was still insured so while people might be out a couch and their computer, they wouldn't be left homeless.
I was living in the condos next to it when that fire happened, I remember sitting on the grass across the road by the Talisman center watching the firemen put out cinders that were landing on the roof of our building and watching the helicopter grab water from the river to dump on the fire, and near me was a guy on the phone to his insurance agent trying to get his "super expensive" Persian rugs added to his policy.. while he watched the fire try to spread across the street to his condo lol.
He didn't get it, they had a 24 hour clause or something.
I also got money from the government twice for repairs due to basement flooding. And I lived on a big hill, never thought it would ever be an issue. But that's a situation were I can't buy insurance, so not comparable either.

Content and mortgage fees during that time I believe. But yes, I agree, different scenario.

I don't think the government went to that much detail, I just had to put in a claim with them and they paid, I can't even remember if someone came out or not.
I was on a big hill, no standing water anywhere so the drains were working fine.. the ground was just completely soaked from all the rain.

FYI condo insurance covers the structure only, your "content" insurance better be enough to cover everything inside including appliances, cabinetry etc.

Photon/Puck Luck... just realized I may be talking something else. Are we talking about municipal or provincial government?

Nope, it had nothing to do with the city. It was 100% the fault of my property and mother nature.
Anyone without insurance was told to file a government assistance form.
A guy came in for 5 minutes and 2 weeks later I got a 15k cheque in the mail. The cities municipal system had nothing to do with it.
Thankfully the government bailed out Calgarians to the tune of $40 million dollars during that flood.

Then I stand corrected. I'm guessing a state of emergency was declared then?

I don't think there was, has Calgary ever declared a state of emergency?
It was just Alberta paying for damages which were not insured (my insurance covered sewer backup, but I could not get flood insurance).
EDIT: Google says yes they have, so it very well could have been. My neighbours' houses were fine, mine I had to get ripped out down to studs 4 feet off the floor and treated for mold and everything.

Yeah, same situation with me. Can't get flood insurance, but they helped out more than I actually needed as well...
Anyways back to Slave Lake... I'm thinking they will help out the uninsured in this situation probably not fully since that would likely cost in the hundreds of millions if not billions, but they'll do something to help the people out. Not doing so would be a shame.
