You think it's appropriate to complain about gas prices in a thread about how 7000 people had to be evactuate becasue THEIR WHOLE FREAKING TOWN burned down?

And to address your wildly inappropriate comment, do you really not understand why a major curtailment of domestic oil production would result in gas prices rising?

Heartless and clueless...good job.

the prices should only reflect the shortage after it hits the refineries and finally the gas stations, but yet they always rise almost immediately after any kind of bad news happens. and i don't see how mentioning gas prices right after a comment about how oil fields are being shut down is inappropriate

The bolded part shows you have no idea how a commodity market works.

The unbolded part shows you have no understanding of why complaining about gas prices in a thread about an entire town getting devestated is silly.

Back on topic, I've got a few friends who live in Slave, one of them is down here for the week taking a course. He's rounding up supplies to take back with him when he heads back north at the end of the week. It's great to see people like him who are doing what they can to help out, especially considering there's a good chance he's one of the folks who's lost just about everything and will need help shortly.

The mayor of Slave said on Global tonight "one minute we were in a briefing saying there was no danger and the next we were running for our lives." She and the MLA were using water bottles to douse some flames as they were leaving the office and she said there was no time to issue an official evacuation notice because the situation had turned on them "in minutes."

Harrowing stuff.

That seems to be the story... Dad said the wind changed and the sky went black then red - the red was because it started raining burning embers on everything.

He's still at a church in Athabasca says they are being treated really well - they still don't seem to be giving them much information - don't think he realizes yet how bad it is... They are hoping to let them back to see if anything is left by the weekend.

On CBC radio this afternoon they had a woman on who basically said the same thing. They had noticed lots of dark smoke, but nothing official had been issued, so people probably wern't too concerned.

They were sitting down to dinner in their back yard, and the next thing they knew, their neighbours yard was on fire. They ran to the front of the house to find the house across the street was on fire. They ran to the back yard again and the shed between their neighbours house and their own house was now on fire, so they obviously had to leave immediatley.

Anybody know of a source to find out what has burned down and what hasn't - neighbourhoods, specific addresses, etc?

I've split off the insurance discussion into a new thread, please use that.

Good news! My brother found out today that his house is still there, he's heading there tonight or tomorrow morning to check things out.

An amazing weather phenomenon. Took a large number of rare things to line up to make that happen.

Well finally bought a smartphone just so I can be back in the loop a bit. Been evacuated out of Red Earth since sunday afternoon. Fire went right up the east side of town. Got as close as a km and a half from my house, according to a friend who is there fighting fires. 1 house lost, a couple trailers of a maintenance company lost, other places have heat and smoke damage. Was able to load up my holiday trailer and pull it to Peace River. Volunteers here have been great, even though I haven't had to use the services they are providing. Hotels here have been putting people up for free, and everyone has been quite helpful here. Still hard to get accurate information, but looks like we are still basically out of our homes until at least monday.

BUMP

Investigators have concluded that the fire was most likely started by arson.
