Oilsands operations in Fort MacMurray also being evacuated.

There's a number of ongoing forest fires in that region.

Holy crap! They're saying 30-40% of buildings in Slave lake are smoldering heaps now. Really hope this thing gets under control fast.

@CityofEdmonton

City of Edmonton
We ask Edmontonians NOT to drop off donations to Northlands where Slave Lake evacuees are staying. No supplies needed at this time. #yeg

Based on Twitter reports (where "Slave Lake" was trending top-five world wide), it seems the town hall, police station, library, radio station, mall and several apartment buildings are all gone.

I hope it wasn't started because of some dick throwing away his cigarette carelessly.

Damn... loooong drive ahead. I'm guessing they won't be doing 180 up the highway, so 5+ hours to get there.

I booted up to get a photo of them. They're actually only going about 110/115. Lights on, in one big convoy. I'll post a pic.

would they be doing normal highway speed or will they have their lights on to move through traffic quicker like when they respond to a normal fire call?

EDIT: guess that answers my question above

Yeah. I suspect they would only be going slightly above the speed limit at most. Probably looking at 2 1/2 hours to Edmonton, time getting through Edmonton, then a quick jump west to the 44 North and rejoining the 2 west of Athabasca. That would be another 2-2 1/2 hours.

i wonder if they'll get stuck behind any jagoffs doing 110 in the left lane who refuse to move over

Besides Slave Lake having native origins, when did the word slave become racist? Bhah!

I am in communication with a friend who has a house in the SE area, he wasn't able to get any of his possessions. Going to be significant loss.

At least he and his family are safe.

Its at least a 5 1/2 hour drive to Slave from Calgary. Thats in an SUV. For the CFD it will be 6 1/2 to 7 hours...they'll need to fill up at least once.
