Exactly. Tate has shown some decent qualities, and not just in cleanup duty, but he is 28, has thrown 73 passes in his 3 year CFL career (including Sask's practice roster), but this is the CFL and a backup QB.
Things change pretty quickly over the course of a year in the CFL, and he could fade into irrelevance fairly quickly for any number of reasons. Ask John Grace, or Labinjo...those guys were bonafide starters and lost it all within a season for the most part.
Burris has to struggle extremely (and not his perpetual detractors definition of struggling) for there to be any chance of him not playing the next few seasons here after this one, and that includes being protected in the expansion draft in 12 months+.
We'd trade one of them, hopefully burris, before we got to the expansion draft.

Tate is 26. he's shown good enough composure to be a future starter in the CFL. This year we'll be seeing a lot of Tate imo. Hank is a regular season QB, he keeps failing when it counts in the playoffs (except in 08, he avoided making mistakes and Labinjo and Co. made the plays).
I would say Stamps will likely protect Tate knowing Burris will likely not move to play on an expansion team. If Ottawa selects him, the Stamps can re-acquire for a neg list player or something. His cost won't be much at 36, 37 years old.
When you have the likes of Lewis, Rambo, Bryant, Reynolds etc, you just have to make smart plays and get them the ball. Especially for a young guy, he'd have a lot of targets.

In any given game count how many times he flat out misses wide open wr's. That and his turnovers make him one of the most overrated players I've ever seen in football. Last year cgy Had maybe the best team I've seen at 23 of the 24 starting positions.
yea I think Calgary protects Tate. We have seen what Burris can do (and it's not all good things) and he will be getting up there in age. do you protect a guy who maybe has 3 or 4 years left and has proven to be dissapointing in the playoffs, or a guy who is entering his prime and has shown some consistency and talent?
as another poster mentioned, one year is a long time, this year the Stamps will test to see if Tate can handle more big situations, and assess how Hank is doing at the end. anything can happen in a season

I totally agree. If Calgary leave Burris unprotected, Ottawa will snap up on him in a second. I am sure there are other QBs they can check out ie: Jackson from BC, Jyles from TO, Porter from Hamilton, that Mtl backup QB.
Burris will be 37/38 when Ottawa finally gets around to playing and will be a FA. Not sure that it is the guy that an expansion team should look at building around. I think that Burris would likely choose to retire rather than move his family to a new city for maybe 2 years of playing.

Keeps failing? It wasn't his fault Mccallum missed the chip shot in his last season in Sask. Not his fault the refs have been pathetic the past two seasons.
With Calvillo starting to show his age Burris is the best QB in the league and when he leaves Calgary there will definitely be a downgrade at QB and likely a huge one.

There's half a dozen qbs that all of a sudden become the best qb in the cfl if they had the stamps starting job
im not quite sure what your point is, but that SK team that did 'fine' with him, won a cup without him.
Anyway, Cavillo is a great qb but the system and the talent around you can make you or break you, my point is that Burris is as big a benefactor from that in the past 10 years as anyone.

My point is that he took a Rider team to a chip shot kick of going to the GC, so it isn't like he has only had success on the backs of supposed great Stamp teams.
Put any other QB here outside of AC and the team has likely 2-3 more losses each year and no GC.
Just a little indulgence on my part, because I'm getting impatient for the season to start. This might be a little long but there were a lot of great plays last year, and I think the ending makes it worth it.

Totally disagree but that's ok. He's a turnover and over throw machine. We win the cup last year if we had almost any other starting qb in the cfl. He has more time in the pocket than anyone, best running game by a mile, and a top defense last year.

I actually somewhat agree with you. I didn't think Burris was great last year despite the MVP. In the key games, I thought Burris was ok and in the West final was not very good. However, I do agree that the Stamps don't win the GC without Burris. he was fantastic in that stretch, but for a veteran guy is still too up and down within seasons. having said that i would still take him over alot of the QBs in the CFL.

Hmmmm not really sure on that one. Who would have, or could have, done better. Now I'm no Hank lover, I think he's a decent QB, but certainly not the smartest by a long shot. He gets by on pure athleticism and sometimes that bites him in the patoot. Still that is more than "most CFL QBs".
So out of last years QBs who would have driven the Stamps to the GC?
Calvillo - likely
Glenn - doubtful he has fewer gray cells than Henry.
Lemon - Not
Pierce (or any other Bomber QB) - Nope. Durant - Possible but the Jury is still out.
Ray - Nope
Printers (or any other BC QB) - Nope
At this point I'd still take Hank and his bumbles over Durant, so I think there is really only one QB in the league who would have done better than Henry.

when you put it that way ... not alot of vet qb's anymore out there. I would say I'd put Ray as likely, he had similar qb ranking through most of the season, and had pure garbage around him. He's is a qb in a bad situation. There is one QB in BC, forget his name that has some decent upside, and I would upgrade to Durant any day of the week. The thing about QB's, especially in the CFL is that you are in large part as good as the rest of the team around you, so I'm sure over the years, Toronto, Wpg and Hamilton have gone through QB's that would have done fine in better situations.

Travis Lulay. Decent upside, looks ilke he can be a starer but very unproven at this point.

Well Ray is a decent QB no doubt, but better than Hank? Im not so sure. Ray is great at the "dink and dunk" type of Offense, 3-5 yards per toss, but I dont think he's great at stretching the field. Burris has him hands down on that side of the coin. Burris is also more athletic and when he wants can hoof it for a first down. Ray is just strong and isnt usually tackled the first time.
Lulay hasnt proven a thing yet, he came in when there was really no pressure other than to do what he can. Now that teams know him better they will key their defenses around his strengths.

That used to be the case for Ray but if you watch him now his already weak arm is pathetic now and he can make about 50% of the throws needed in the this league.
Not sure how you complain about Burris being a turnover machine and the talk about Durant as an upgrade. That guy is about a 50/50 chance at turning the ball over every possession. His throw the ball up and hope that Dressler can outrun the DB or that Fantusz can get enough of a push off of the receiver to catch the ball would not work in Calgary. Especially when you take away the ref bias that he has in Sask ignoring the Offensive PI they use. Durant is as dumb a QB as there is in the league and would be a terrible choice to have in Calgary.
Lulay may have decent upside (decent at best) but is a long way from being Burris and likely never going to come close.
The Riders exploit a weakness in the CFL game that makes their offense seem more talented than it really is. Durant and his sucess is the epitomy of the traditional CFL offense. Drop into the pocket and heave it up so far that only two things can happen:
Deep reception leading to a TD
or
An INT that looks bad on a QB's statsline, but in effect isn't so bad because he hucks it so far down the field it might as well have been a punt
The man is completely incapable of driving down the field 5-10 yeards at a time. Every team realizes this, but alas since the top CB's go to the NFL and the CDN ratio pretty much ensures that you have to have an inept or slow Canadian safety, it allows them the play this way. Exciting for the casual fan because a TD can happen on every play, akin to watching someone play with Jeremy Roenick in NHL '94 for football purist.
