Game tonite in HD
Can't believe it....CBC is actually pulling their one and only HD truck to Calgary for the game tonite!! Good timing to 'cause I just flashed up the HT setup in the basement....106" screen here we go!

is it in HD on the regular cbc, or do i need to tune to a cbcHD channel on bell? i',m just setting up pvr, want to record right one.

It will be in SD on the CBC-SD channels. However it will be in HD on the CBC-HD channel.
So tune to the HD channel.

Jesus, the audio levels are worse than usual on the HD channel. I have the game nice and loud on the stereo, but when the commercials come on it just blasts the room. I have to reach for the remote and mute the sonofabich.
Seriously, why can't they utilize a limiter, filter, or a gate, Ridiculous.

The audio was bad but the picture was great. I didn't know it would be in HD and just went wow when I saw the picture.

It was a little better as the game went on, but I agree. I suppose that's what happens when you have a station trying to broadcast in HD before they have stereo TV figured out.

This thread made my day! I checked the forum about 5:00 pm, and was shocked that the CBC game was in HD.
So, I quickly ran to the store, grabbed the adapters I needed, and quickly set up the plasma!

Yeah, the HD looks a lot nicer than the SD, that is forsure.
However, 2 years ago, HD looked way better than it does now. It is compressed to the point now that you can see the effects. A full uncompressed HD is about 19 MB's per second, and I have been told that Shaw often compressed to 12 MB's per second, and Bell is around 15 MB's second. Its a shame - especially when compared to how it used to look.
Like others on AVS Forums, I have taken to calling the current HD 'HD Light'

I've had my HD setup for a year now and some HD broadcasts aren't as impressive as others and may ahve degraded.
I hear the only way to get uncompressed signals is with a big dish. Is their HD setups for big dishes and can a person intercept their signals?

MAN I LOVE HDTV! I went to the game, but had the pvr record it, I watched the whole game again when I got home. I'm still blown away by the difference.

There isn't much for FTA HD broadcasts. Part of the reason is a lack of hardware; plus the fact that most broadcasters are encrypting the signal.
The problem with compression has more to do with joe average not realizing there's a difference between quality and quantity. Shaw for example added a few HD channels without adding any bandwidth. Guess what happens to the PQ when that happens.
