Default Straws

Is there some sort of magical powers that straws have? They make any drink taste a lot better.

I usually don't drink much water and if I don't drink water with a straw I can probably finish half a cup, but with a straw I can drink 2 cups.

Anyone else notice that straws make any drink more enjoyable?

There's probably some awesome explanation out there.

They're also more sanitary than $20 bills.

If you drink beer with a straw you should be thrown out of the saddledome

Somehow it did not surprise me at all that the guy who prefers all his drinks with a straw does not drink beer. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you would turn down a nice scotch as well (even with a straw)?

Sounds to me like you're just grasping at straws.

A straw puts the liquid being drunk on a different part of the tongue, further back.

Found a pretty good link with an explanation.

With all of that, let's think straws vs. no straws. If you were drinking, say, a milkshake without a straw, then you get a big clump all at once. There's not a lot of room in your mouth, and so not much air circulation. Also, the milkshake is pretty cold, so you won't get much going on by way of nerve impulses or VOCs.

If you drank the same milkshake with a straw, then you would just get a little at a time. That small amount of milkshake hits your tongue, which heats the relatively small amount of milkshake rather than being instantly frozen by it. The warmed milkshake lets off VOCs, and also your tongue can maintain its tasty chemical reactions. That, combined with all the air that's flowing through your system as part of the mechanism of sucking liquid through a straw, you have a lot more flavor happening.

And that, in a nutshell, is why some things taste better through a straw

lol

I always drink my beer through a straw at the dome. I don't care if people think I'm lazy or stupid or flamboyantly gay. It's the best way to keep my beer from getting crap kicked in it from the people behind me, except for actually holding it the whole time. To be honest, I'd prefer drinking my Saddledome beer out of one of those steins with the thumb flip lid, but since that's not gonna happen, I'll just drink beer through the straw.

What about a slush?

Are we supposed to use the scoop end like some sort of fag?
