Djokovic still hasn't lost this year.. 30-0. Can he beat Nadal on clay?
The gap between #1 and #2 is closing.
uptodate Nadal has 12470 and Djokovic has 10265. The winner tomorrow gets 400 more. This is really amazing because the gap was more than 5000 points at the beginning of the year.

Remarkable.
So going into next week, Nadal has to defend 1000 points, Djokovic ZERO since he didn't play Rome last year. He loses 20 points from another tournament.
So in reality, the rankings are now.
Nadal 12470-1000+10=11480
Djokovic 10265-20+10=10255
----
Also freaking Rome already started!
Verdasco def. Raonic 6-4, 6-4

I was just looking at an article from the Canadian Press and if Djokovic wins the Italian Open, the number one spot could be his:
If Djokovic wins his seventh consecutive title of 2011 at the Foro Italico and Nadal fails to reach the semifinals, Djokovic will become the first player other than Nadal or Roger Federer to hold the No. 1 ranking since February 2004.
Like you said, 1000 points for Nadal to defend. Yowza.

Yes that is true.. my calculation was off somewhere. I think Djokovic gets a tournament added on this week or something weird like that.
Points right now are
Nadal 11480 (that is with the subtraction of 1000)
Djokovic 10675
So yes if Djokovic gets 1000 and Nadal fails to get to the semis (only getting 180 or less) then Novak is #1. Nadal not making the semis on clay is very unlikely though!
You could see a big flip at the French Open, Nadal has 2000 point to defend and Djokovic only 360. Can you imagine a scenario where Nadal beats Djokovic at the French Open final but Djokovic takes #1 away from him?

Federer's freefall continues with a loss to Gasquet today in the 3rd Round in Rome.
Looking quickly at the updated rankings.. Raonic will lose a couple of spots to 28th on Monday which does ensure that he will be seeded at Roland Garros

Nadal beats Cilic, so he hangs on to the number 1 ranking... for now! I believe it's Djokovic's for the taking soon.

Djokovic just taken to a brink but survives. Defeats Murray 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 to make it 36 wins in a row. Murray served for the match at 5-4 but blew it.
Another '800 pointer' tomorrow. If Djokovic beats Nadal tomorrow again on clay after just going through 3 hours of THAT, he's not human.

He is not human, he beats Nadal 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
He's not officially #1 but he's the defacto #1 going into the french open once Nadal's 2000 points come off.

Wow this is an all girlysports thread.
Sharapova won her clay court title today. She is only missing the French for her career slam.
Here is a picture of her in case you have forgotten what she looks like.

I think he'll win it. The only thing that will stop him is if he draws a bunch of dirtballers that take him to a bunch of 5 setters.
For example
Round of 16: Monfils
Quarterfinals: Ferrer
Semifinals: Murray
Final: Nadal
That would be a tough path to break through. Otherwise, he probably does undefeated until Wimbledon.

Men's Qualifying Draw for Roland Garros.
128 entrants, 16 qualifers.
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/sc.../qs/index.html
The 128 players are divided into 16 sections of 8 which each feature two seeded players. The winner of the each of the 16 sections advances to the main draw. They are like mini-quarterfinals.
Peter Polansky is in Section 11 and immediately faces the 11th seed Lukasz Kubot of Poland (ranked 116)
Frank Dancevic is in Section 15 and immediately faces the 15th seed Lucas Lacko of Slovakia (ranked 120)
Sections 11 and 15 are good draws and these are beatable guys. Better than being in the top sections 1-8.
