Calgary Municipal Politics Thread
As the thread suggests, let's start talking about Civic Politics here in Calgary.
To get the ball rolling...
In the couple of months since his election, has Nenshi done anything noteworthy? What can we expect him to roll out in the New Year?
Has there been any squabbles amongst the Aldermen?
Who is McIver working for now?
How about that Bridge?
Are my taxes going up???
Here's the link to the last thread that I can find relating to Calgary's Political landscape.

I haven't noticed any discussion regarding the LaCaille group's 'scandal'.
Does anyone have any more info on this?

I hope there's no connection to the bridge...

I heard ex Mayor Dave owns land at the end of the new SW LRT line and is building a mall as soon as the CTrain is open. Classy guy that Dave.

Major Nenshi was mentioned on Realtime with Bill Maher last week.

The city gets an A+ on snow removal from this cowboy. My neighbourhood streets have been plowed infinitely more often than in years past.

City's business taxes second highest in the country.
In other words you were being lied to by Bronco last year that we needed to increase taxes to be able to afford the same standard of snow removal as other municipalities in Canada. Bottom line, I hope Nenshi can address this and make Calgary competative again.

Its to bad the article didnt specify the numbers.
Example if Montreal is taxed at example 50 and Calgary and 45 and 3rd is 30 then we are high. But if everyone is only separated by a slim margin then its less of an impact. Sadly I have come to expect headlines from newspapers and only hope that the facts will be in fine print somewhere. Usually the Herald is better than that.

Source? Although he did/does own some property near the line, he abstained from all votes pertaining to the WLRT. This was well publicized at the time. I haven't heard anything about him owning land to build a mall at the end of the line.

Regarding the bridge, I think that we just need to get over it. The Rick Bells of the world will continue to fill third-rate newspapers with inane ramblings about it, but love it or hate it, it's a done deal. We've had an election since then. Time to move on.

And this!!!

^I totally agree and really like the work that Nenshi is doing in general. I do worry that a failure to get the airport tunnel (which would follow-up the non-passing of the secondary suites) is problematic. I also worry about the continued 8-7 votes or a lot of divisiveness on council in general.
That being said though, I know that he is doing the right things and doing what he can (the mayor has somewhat limited power in some of these situations afterall). I am happy to have voted for him and happy that he got elected.

Forget McIver, Higgins has pulled the ultimate vanishing act. Has any trace of her been seen since the election?

Crappy that we really didn't have enough turnover with the old council, we really still have the same uncooperative council that we had the years prior to Nenshi. For the most part anyway.

Well yes that is part of the issue. I guess I expected Nenshi to take a bit more of a diplomatic approach and build bridges to eliminate some of this. I guess in some ways I don't care though...as long as things get dine and good decisions are made.
