my advice to anyone interested in jogging for the purpose of fat burning, is duration/distance is irrelevant, it's all about interval cardio look it up.

You are right....Once you realize that wearing running shoes is like wearing casts on your feet you will never go back to them and if you try to you will quickly get a sore back or sore feet. Amazing the transformation that your feet will make to adapt to a natural way of running. Too many people dismiss VFF's based on the ugly factor but once you are in motion....who cares....it is a much more enjoyable run when you are using proper technique and letting your feet take control. For something a little less ugly then the KSO's or Classics there is always the Speed : http://birthdayshoes.com/vibram-five...iew-and-photos Good luck trying to find them though! Like most other VFF's they can't make them quick enough. REI in the States was telling me that they had to add a couple factories just to try to keep up with demand, which they can't....

Has anyone tried minimalist shoes? I was just reading some reviews on the New Balance Minimus shoes.

would my nike 7.0 trainers count as that?

Just googled and looks like they do. I really like them they are so light you don't feel anything. Sucks for running on rocks. If you are a size 10 you can take them for a spin if you would like

Don't spend $ on running clinics.

All you need to know - left, right, repeat.

Also, why pay to run in races? You can run for free any time.

These are supposed to be good minimalist shoes? http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Prod...ot-Trail-Glove
I bought Nike Frees a few years ago when they first came out. I kept the sticker that was on the box and in bold yellow it says......

"Attention! Continued use of this product may result in improved performance".
Studies show that stronger, more flexible feet can increase performance, and that barefoot training is one of the best ways to build both strength and flexibility in your feet. Nike Free footwear simulates the properties of barefoot training-building stronger, more flexible feet.

I actually don't mind Frees for short runs 5km and under but anything more I would much rather be in VFF's. I don't miss the days of black toenails and mashed toes. At least many of the minimalist shoes look half decent.

That's my thinking. Why am I paying good money to put myself through hell when I can do that myself for free? There are some good trails around here, with the kilometers even marked on the trail... what else do I need besides my iPhone armband and a couple hours?

Finishers medals and t shirts and supreme girl watching and, in a ten km race in Kona, Hawaii in March, free beer at the finish line at 9 am.

I find my training pace is always completely different than my race pace. It gets the competitive juices going in a timed event.

It's also a very qunatitative way of measuring your training progress. Setting legit personal best times, and having a goal are all by products of runnning in a road race.

Plus, like Cowperson said, getting to run behind girls in tight spandex can be VERY motivating, and worth the price of admission alone.
