Makayla?? That one is odd for being one of the most popular (dont know a single person with that handle myself)...as is Ava.

Top ten rankings for both sexes showed more volatility in 2005 than in years past. For the first time in the history of the BabyCenter Top 10 Baby Names List, Michael and Sarah have been knocked off the list. Connor also fell out of the top list this year, with Jack (for the first time) and Andrew moving up into the top ten. In addition to Sarah, Hailey and Abigail fell out, and were replaced by Sophia, Makayla, and Ava, which all made their first appearance in the top ten for girls.

Surprised to see Olivia so high- that is my grandma's middle name, and I've always thought it sounded elegant and beautiful. Interesting how some names go in cycles every few generations. I also like Jack too. Simple, old school.

And when are parents going to stop naming their sons Matthew. Must be in the top 10 every year. Same thing with Madison for the past 10 years or so for girl's names.

In the local paper here they have a feature at the end of the year that lists all the babies born at the city hospital. It's quite something to go over the list of names and pick out all the crazy spellings and name-combo's people come up with these days.

Anyways, when I have my first boy I am going to push hard for Addison. I had a teacher in high school with that name, and he was a great guy. Taught me a lot about life and being a stand-up man. Not only that, but I think it's another one of those distinguished, old-school sounding names that is still somewhat unique.

I don't know why but changing the spelling of a name to be original gets on my nerves, like Teighlor. Do people not realize that's what strippers and porn stars do?

I must know at least three of each, not including hte friggin 15 mikes I know and the 6 or 7 Daves or Davids.

I hate to sound like I'm lashing out at the bible & the playas in there... And I also don't want to offend hte folks that named their junior one of these names out of acknowledgement/respect for an ancestor.


When I was in junior high, I knew a Ryan Clark on my hockey team, another Ryan Clark on the team above (must've been fun for the lesser Clark when the teams were posted), plus there was a Ryan Clark at my school.

If your surname takes up more than one column in the phonebook, you might want to consider a less common name for junior. Just my opinion.

The AB government puts out a list of baby names each year too. Looks like there were 141 Owens in 2004, 1 Owain, and 7 Ewans.

Aidan is the name of a popular character from "Sex and the City". Don't ask me how I know...

And yes, Makayla is just a cutsie way of spelling "Michaela".

hmm. I can think of at least two people on this site who have sons with that name. not saying if I"m one of them, or if the other one is the guy who owns this place

and interestingly my sister just named her daughter Ava and I know of at least 3 other kids with that name recently, yet had never known anyone until this year

I hear Addison and I expect to see someone in a dress. Sorry, it might just be me, but it sounds girly.

Parents should have to live with their weird spelled names for a year so they can see how stupid they are and how annoying they are for the kid who gets them. Or at least be reasonable enough to give them middle names which are insane so the kid can use it when they get old enough.

"So your name is Taylor?" "No, it's Teighlor. T-E-I...."
Or picture substitute teachers: "Is....umm...Tee-guh-lor here?"

Also parents should find a 10 year old and see what kind of insulting renditions of the name they can come up with.

Nevaeh is a first for me though. Is the middle name Star? Or maybe Noom? It should really be Lleh.

As one of 4985792345792345 Dave's though, I can't really complain, it's hard to #@$% it up. Confusing though when you have two bro-in-law's named Dave too!

As for the "Anya" pronunciation, I'm sure that a hockey board is not the best place to ask since we're all used to European hokey players and the y sounding j.

Almost everyone I talk to thinks it's; "An-juh".

The poor kid will forever be correcting people. Sure it's unique, but this is Canada, not Sweden or Finland.
