Indeed Slava. Can't beat a good political thread on CP. It had been too long since the coalition one.

I think my favorite part is learning who's a greasy pinko commie and who's a corrupt kitten eating wannabe Republican.

yeah when the Maritime results came in Quebec has that one riding in the Atlantic time zone 'Gaspe-Ille De Madelaine' which in Quebec is as french a region as it gets. The riding should have been around 60% Bloc vote. When that one started going NDP, you just knew the Bloc were in big big trouble.

Yeah, and you gave the NDP only 90 seats.

Although i'm not a fan of any former Reform Party member, I think Kenney does a great job.

Also Nenshi did a great job in commentary for the CBC. Too bad they didn't put him in the national spotlight and we only got to hear him for a minute every 2 hours.

Then when those started rolling in I knew it was over...certainly didnt want to gloat about it but was both pleased and stunned to be honest.

Hopefully everyone can turn the page on the last 5 years and start anew. I, personally, believe this was the absolute best result for everyone in Canada, not just CPC supporters. Hopefully Harper and co. can outperfrom the expectations of the left and live up to those from the right, and govern as a center right entity.
I actually think that it comes down to vote splits more than a successful campaign. They didn't lose votes, and gained a few percent in Ontario. I'm not sure (and not bothering to look into it) but if the Liberals and NDP had not split to that extent then I think we'd have been closer to a majority but not quite there? Hard to say and its all conjecture at this point.

If they govern as a fiscally conservative center right party then I'm good with that. I still think that they've promised a lot of money over the next four or five years though, and that doesn't please me. I also hate the idea of cap and trade and don't understand why we can't just put a price on carbon and chart our own course away from the US. Bottom line is that I want the government to succeed, regardless of my partisan leanings.

I appreciate Slava's point that, in the end, we all want what's best for Canada. There are just some differing opinions on how to get there.

With that in mind, a lot of the "sky is falling" posts I see from friends online today are all that more infuriating.

Not surprised by the low turnout in Alberta, given that almost all of our ridings are foregone conclusions.

Curious what everyone thinks on this.

Did the NDP really win big?

1) They lost power in that they went from being the swing vote to a majority opposition.
2) Their major gains were from a protest vote in a province that I'm not so sure they understand. That will be a tricky tightrope and I just can't see them holding those seats long term.

That being said, they gained some serious traction on the federal landscape.

Not as big as they would like everyone to think.

Canada won big time though with the destruction of the Bloc.

You do that, and a big chunk of the carbon reduction will be wiped out by companies substituting US operations for Canadian ones.

Example: bitumen upgrading. Alberta produces bitumen from the oil sands. We have a competitive advantage in upgrading the bitumen to oil, because that way only the oil needs to be transported to market.

If we were to take unilateral action against carbon emissions, we'd risk losing the construction of new upgraders to Montana. If we make it economically preferable for companies to pipe diluted bitumen accross the border, do the separation and and upgrading there, then pump the diluent back to Alberta, then that's what the companies will do.

It hurts our economy, and the net effect on the environment is actually more carbon emissions, because now you instead of just transporting oil, you're transporting bitumen and diluent.

So what?

It started as a Western movement, has some of the same principals within it, but has some revised policy to appeal to the Eastern vote, which includes the removal of things I didn't care for anyway.

I'm not upset about that in the least.
