It says that the place was raided by police because they suspected they were using underage girls in the sex trade. No one is seriously saying that Layton used the services of a child, nor has there been any confirmation that the "massage parlour" in question actually employed underage girls. Try reading the article. I just don't get how so many people can speak against an article so vehemently even though they didn't bother to read it.

I don't think that it matters that Jack Layton received a handjob at a massage parlor 15 years ago - the problem that I have with this is that it shows a real lack of judgement on his part considering he was in public office at the time and I would imagine that people who run these brothel-lite establishments are not the most savoury characters. I don't think that anything will come of it as I think the most damage that Jack Layton can do to his chances in the election is talk about his platform and how he promises to pay for his social platforms.
And Daradon, why would this make you vote NDP? Should you not instead look at the issues as you tell other people to do? I just find that to be mildly confusing as on one hand you are saying that no one should pay attention to this and we should focus on the real issues and policies... while at the same time saying this will shift your vote to the NDP. Seems odd to me.

Breaking a CP rule here and copying the article. THAT YOU PROVIDED.
Because it contains nothing of underage girls...
"TORONTO - Jack Layton was found laying naked on a bed by Toronto Police at a suspected Chinatown bawdy house in 1996, a retired Toronto police officer told the Toronto Sun.
The stunning revelation about the current leader of the New Democratic Party comes days before the federal election at a time when his popularity is soaring.
When the policeman and his partner walked into a second-floor room at the Toronto massage parlour, they saw an attractive 5-foot-10 Asian woman who was in her mid-20s and the married, then-Metro councillor, lying on his back in bed.
Layton was cautioned by police and released without being charged.
Olivia Chow, Layton's wife, denied her husband had done anything wrong in an e-mail statement late Friday night.
"Sixteen years ago, my husband went for a massage at a massage clinic that is registered with the City of Toronto," Chow wrote. "He exercises regularly; he was and remains in great shape; and he needed a massage.
"I knew about this appointment, as I always do."
In a letter from his lawyer, Layton recalls "being advised by police at the time that he did nothing wrong."
What police say happened on Jan. 9, 1996, was recorded in the former cop's notebook, which was reviewed and photocopied by the Toronto Sun.
The former Asian crime unit officer, who requested anonymity, details a prior police raid on the "premise currently ID as a bawdy house" looking for underage Asian hookers and a subsequent follow-up visit to the two-storey brick storefront on Jan. 9.
At first the policemen didn't realize they were interviewing one of the best-known Toronto politicians who was married to Chow, also a Metro councillor and now the incumbent NDP MP for Trinity-Spadina.
The officer's notebook indicates he asked the suspected john: "Did you receive any sexual services?"
He replied: "No sir, I was just getting a shiatsu."
The cop: "Why did you have all your clothes off?"
The suspected john: No answer.
The cop: "Are you aware that there were sex acts being done here?"
The suspected john: "No sir."
The woman, who was from mainland China, denied masturbating the suspected john but when the question was repeated became nervous and replied, "I don't know I only come to work today," the cop's notes show.
His notes also claim he saw the "female dump wet Kleenex into garbage."
In the interview with the Sun, the officer said: "I asked him for his wallet and I looked at his name and I looked at the last name and it looked familiar.
He's registered as 'John' and I thought he's a 'john.'"
Layton's Christian name is John.
"I explained to him this was a bawdy house and then I asked him the silliest question, 'Are you any relation to the councillor, Jack Layton?' and ... he had that defeated look on his face and he said, 'We are one in the same,'"
the ex-cop said.
The former officer said Layton, seemed quiet and mellow and denied that he knew it was a suspected bawdy house.
The police had to decide what to do with the controversial councillor.
"To have arrested him and charged him would have served our egos a lot more. Layton was a thorn in the side of the police, siding with the anti-poverty movement in '96 or '97 ... Jack was anti-police," the ex-cop said.
"We looked at it and thought do we take advantage of this, or do we look at this like (he's) any other person, put it away and we hope this thing dies a slow death."
In the end, they came to the conclusion they shouldn't charge him.
"If we had barged in and he was engaged in a sex act and we had plainly saw it, then it would have been a different story."
The officers said police filled out a suspect investigation card that recorded his name, address, date of birth -- July 18, 1950 -- height and weight.
That information would be filed away by a civilian administrator for crime analysts to use in tracking criminals with particular attributes.
The former cop is surprised it took so long for the incident to become public.
"This stuff was never leaked out back then. The professionalism was outstanding. I thought this would have come out. This thing within the circle was so well known."
The policemen warned the councillor about the dangers of hanging out in suspected bawdy houses that could be run by Asian triads.
"I remembered lecturing him on a lot of these triads, they'd videotape the customers and extort them afterwards. Jack went pale. I said to him you have to understand it's quite possible," he says.
"He came on a bicycle. I escorted him down and he went away on his bike."
Unless I'm down on my STREET, I don't get it. 'Enlighten' me Tranny. Where are the underage girls?

As I mentioned, I will vote against, every vote this story sways, because we can't go that way.
If it's important to the issues, then yes, drag him through the mud. But does this matter? Or is this Birth Cert. Canada Edition?

The problem with Layton being there is he couldn't have known either the age or the williness of the prostitute. Thats why you don't go to seedy brothals. IF Layton gave a damn about stopping sexual trafficing and slavery he could have made better choices.

I think this is completely different than the Birth Certificate crap in the United States with the Tea Party and Co., if only merely in the sense that this shows that Jack Layton put himself into a vulnerable position while he held public office in Toronto and a complete lack of foresight and common sense. I strongly doubt that when he walked into the massage parlor he didn't have alarm bells going off in the back of his head and if he didn't he is an idiot, plain and simple.
He could have just been there to receive a massage because he was riding his bike to work but at the same time when your career is in politics you can never put yourself in a situation in which the allegations can even be made. It likely is a smear campaign - but one in which Jack Layton brought upon himself due to a stupid action.
I wonder if weekly handjobs could be incorporated into the budget because then I would vote for Jack.

You wanted the connection in the article about underage girls, and you got it.
Regardless of all this, Layton's getting more of the limelight simply due to the sorry state the Liberal party is in. Layton's still spewing the same idealistic kumbaya stuff he has previous elections, except now, simply by default, more people are listening to him. Thus he's now getting called out on some of this pie in the sky stuff which previously went ignored because it was coming out of his mouth. Now he has to backtrack quickly (Bank of Canada coercion, Cap and Trade pollution policies) when pressed for details or an explanation and previous situations like this are suddenly more likely to be brought up.
When push comes to shove, its how many voters who previously voted Liberal who will now vote NDP. Just my gut, but I think more are swayed to NDP in these pols than who previously voted Liberal (or Bloc) then CPC, so that's where the Harper majority is won or lost. On Monday, when former Liberal voters are standing there, I think it will be tougher for them to vote orange than blue.

The funny thing is I dont think this has any real effect on the voting public at this point. If this had come out weeks ago and was brought up in the debates or the multiple interviews that followed and Layton came across as less than honest about it all...then yeah it could have made a dent.
As it is though, when news is realeased on Friday nights it rarely registers with people as they go about their busy lives over the weekend. Its an old tactic really. So the timing does give pause as to who would leak it at this point and that they really dont want the spotlight shining on them right now.

I got the connection. I see it. You are right, but I think it's silly. It's usual political nonsense and it disturbs me (as you can see). It would disturb me with any other candidate. (Well maybe not Gillies) We are all better than this. If there is a crime, then commit it. If not, let it be. The fact it's 16 years old is so stupid. A cop who wants to help. Yeah, there's no dirty cops...

The article says point blank that the masseuse Layton was with was in her mid 20s....I think we can get past bringing Chris Hansen on the case?
I'm sure that there are some other SNL fans out there. Nows your chance....on Monday vote Jack "Handy" for PM!

Duceppe putting no credence in any of it...and i expect the other leaders will do the same.

"I believe in freedom of the press," he added when asked about the way the story, which aired Friday night on the Sun News television station, was splashed.
"It isn't up to us to dictate to journalists what to do."
