If you have an earthquake or hurricane it is a certainty that the event will affect numerous houses and people. You don't have that certainty with tornados. Yes they do and will happen but most often they are on the ground for mere seconds and in unpopulated areas. A tornado like this is not typical or a certainty in a normal lifetime. And while the swath of destruction seems large, it pales in comparison to the swath of destruction other natural events unleash on the public.

Nicker mentioned a blizzard and getting into a car accident and I agree with him. I can't control much of anything if I'm in an accident once that accident is occurring. I can control something if the sirens or weather radio go off. I can go to my stocked tornado shelter that is built to withstand a greater than EF4 storm and wait it out. In 2.5 years we've had 2 actual warnings issued for our area (both were doppler indicated and as far as I know no damage was ever found). The other 850ish days I have typically enjoyed the weather in comparison to anywhere I've lived before (canadian west coast, canadian prairies, US and canadian east coast). And the people quite honestly are great.

Just a great place to live and raise a family.

I just watched that Youtube video.... first off that person is just completely stupid for doing that. However they had to have balls of steel!!! I have done my fair share of storm chasing but DAMN!!!! As I have said I have been in a position where a 'Nader has been right on top of me , I never want to be semi-close to one of those again. Too many unpredictable things can go on for someone to be that close.

Im okay guys typing on the phone for now. I wasn't at the hotel when it hit. I was about 2 miles away closer to Alberta City and it barely missed me. I've got hundreds of photos. Im tired of the smell of death and mass confusion. Saw a few bodies and parts, looting is crazy, I worked third shift at the hotel last night with no power at all, smelled like natural gas and worried about looters. Ive been carrying my pistol with me everywhere. Watched someone get beat up by a group of thugs with no one to help.

I got to go to bed, been up for 40 something hours and im exhausted.

I've never cried in public but today I witnessed a young under 5 year old girl pulled from what was left of their house. I just broke down and cried and cried...

Time to go to sleep, we have a 6pm curfew to stop the looters.

Ian as I have told you , I am sorry your having to see and go through this. It definitely hits close to home and I know what your going through. It is horrible seeing all the death and destruction. We didnt have much in the way of looters bc Natl guard was on the scene within hours of ours. If you need anything you have my info somewhere give me a shout.

True, there are lots of tornados that hit in the open areas where no one is. We have helicopter news crews that runs behind them and films and we see them live on TV. Big ones like the one in bama , and the one I was in the middle of in Moore, Ok are pretty uncommon. As I say that tho, I can remember a tornado taking the same path , knocking down the McDonalds and Church across the street from in 3 years in a row. That was quite odd. They are a ton of things that are still unknown about tornados but the technology here is getting so good that they are starting to be able to predict the likelihood of them weeks or months out. The one we had last year , they warned us for two weeks we were getting one , on this day , at this time of the day. It was spot on!

I haven't been following this thread so forgive me, but when is it a good time to blame it on the huge gay community in those southern states?

Yeah, The apartment that we live in at the moment missed by a half mile or so. Her dads house (first pictures) only lost a bunch of trees this time and ripped up the plumbing.

I finally got home today after a long long week.

If anyone wants to donate just donate to the Alabama Red Cross. They will be able to get the money to the right people.
