Just get a job at Walmart, they'll pay you to walk around and bull #### customers about actually knowing things.

So how many calories should a male have if they work out 5-6 days a week but is inactive at work (i.e. sit in a chair all day). Any ballpark numbers if they wanted to lose 10-12 lbs?
I am 180 right now and would like to get to 168-170 but I think my portion control has gotten out of hand. I started using myfitnesspal recently to get a better idea of where my calories are coming from. I eat healthy for the most part and don't drink pop or juice, so it has to be portion size I would think. My workout intensity isn't great because I am generally reading/studying and I know that impacts my results. When I am done my exam in June I will definitely ramp up the intensity.

It's ~3500 calories to lose a single pound. Just multiply that by 12 and you'll have your number.

My girlfriend has been talking to me about losing 5-8 pounds, I know a thing or two about putting mass on, but not really taking it off.
Any tips besides the obvious watch your calories? What kind of strats worked for the pros in this thread?

I am a machine Monday-Friday. I eat perfectly and get my workouts in every day. When the weekend comes, I'm active, but I pig out. How do losers here handle their cheats?

Believe it or not, pigging out once a week is very important for your metabolism.
Under eating all week tricks you going into starvation mode and slows down your metabolism.
I'd recommend reading the 4 hour diet which encourages you to eat healthy 6 days a week, and then go absolutely buck wild the remaining day

Definitely works for me! I eat healthy Sunday through Friday and then let Saturday (usually hangover day) be my food fest. It's amazing how well your body responds to certain things.
The other key is not eating past 8 pm. Teaching myself to go to bed without eating right before was tough...

Hmmm, I've heard about the starvation thing and cheating tactics being helpful but I'm probably eating 1000 or more calories over per day on weekends. Does "buck wild" have limits? lol
I guess I should try one cheat day instead of 2.

So, can someone explain the large difference in BMR calculators on myfitnesspal and other sites?
myfitness pal shows my BMR at ~2150 calories ... but if I cut that by 1000 to lose the safe 2 pounds a week, I'd die. Other sites show it in the high 2000's like 2900.
Any insight?

No it isn't.
The general population is so hopeless in the health field. I'd like to meet the people writing these books/giving this advice so I can elbow them in the head.
People see the hard truth and think "no, that's too hard, I don't like that", and become chumps and buy/take any advice that's thrown at them that sounds more appealing and easier.
Lose weight by hard work and good eating habits or.. LOSE WEIGHT BY EATING ANYTHING YOU WANT ONE DAY A WEEK WOOHOO!!
I guess it doesn't matter in the end. 99.9% of you trying will gain all the weight back and probably more. Those that do lose it and maintain it are the ones actually heeding the proper advice and seeking it from the proper sources (rather than the internet).

not pigging out but I think a cheat day where you eat a little higher than your maintenance level calories has been proven to help in weight loss if you are eating at a deficit for the other days

did you put in an activity level on the other ones?
2150 for just an RMR (basically what your body would burn if you didn't move all day) makes sense, add in exercise and just general walking around and you can get up to like 2900-3000
so if you want to lose 2 pounds a week drop 1000 calories from that and it's around 2000

Good stuff here:
www.caloriesperhour.com
I use that site a lot, and I do the manual BMR calculations. It also gives you a general multiplier to account for how much activity you have in a day/week. With the calories burned calculator and food calorie calculator, it has been an extremely useful site for me.

It's been two weeks since I cut out all juices entirely and am sticking to water, skim milk and green tea. I've lost a couple of pounds and my calories are much better on track.
For anyone considering weight loss, remember to cut out ALL juices just like you're doing soda. The sugar content is usually quite high in those drinks regardless of brand. Removing them is kind of a hard thing to do, but it can help be the difference between a good diet and a great diet.

There is absolutely nothing on this great Earth that gives you the right to be so blatantly rude and disrespectful. Your knowledge is a complete waste when you lack human decency and compassion.
The people that post and read this thread are doing their best to attempt to better themselves, their lifestyles, and those around them. If you cannot stand reading things that you think are wrong and horrible, stop reading.
Everyone here wants to share successes and you do nothing but berate people for trying. Just stop.

If you hadn't noticed, my problem is with the way misinformation is so pervasive and actually more accessible than scientifically-backed knowledge.
I never said I had a problem with people attempting to better themselves. In fact, I'm very glad to hear it. It's the people they're taking advice from who can't back up their positions (blankall, SHOGUN) with whom I have a problem.
Thanks for the soapbox speech though. It's nice of you to preach meekness through such forceful words.

Only the last sentence applies to you but I thought this whole thing was funny enough to post.
Marge: [ walking up] So, Homer, how'd you do?
Homer: [ glum] Well, I...
Super: Ladies, please don't tell me you're smoking in a government
building. Because that is _precisely_ the kind of infraction
that can cost a couple of sisters their promotion.
[ they gasp, and stammer]
Homer: [ chuckles to himself] [ sees Marge looking unhappy]
[ sighs] I'll never forgive myself for this.
[ grabs both cigarettes, drags]
Super: Wait a minute! Those are yours, sir?
Homer: [ monotone] Yes. [ coughs] I am in flavor country.
Super: [ skeptical] _Both_ of them?
Homer: [ hacks] It's a big country.
Super: Ladies, I apologize. And you, sir, are worse than Hitler.
[ she slaps him]
