[News] HF article on Flames Euro & NCAA prospects
Pretty interesting, and surprisingly positive, rundown of the Flames' European and University prospects.

Fun fact: Joni Ortio already made his North American debut this season for Abbotsford.
Fun fact #2: Alexander Deilert technically isn't Flames property anymore. He was drafted in 2008 and, since he was not signed by 2010, I believe we lost his rights.

The writer mentioned your first fun fact:
Quote:
He signed an amateur try-out contract with Abbotsford at the end of the season, appearing in one game but was lit up for six goals on 30 shots.
|
I wonder if Ortio will spend the summer in Abbotsford, or elsewhere in North America. Might get him accustomed to the time change, etc. I don't know if it made any difference, but Irving spent the summer in Abby as well and he ended up having a career year.

I'd imagine Ortio will get put on a strength and conditioning plan by Rich Hesketh, who generally does that with everyone in the organization. Greg Nemisz came to town early last summer to work with Hesketh and the coaching staff, so the precedent is there. Once a goalie coach is in place, I wouldn't be surprised if Ortio spent some time with them learning the ins and outs of the smaller ice.

In his interview on the Flames Official Podcast, Ortio said he was going to go back to Europe for the summer and working with his conditioning coach.

Thanks for the link. I don't get how HF has MacMillan, Cameron, Seabrook, Pelech, and Cameron rated ahead of Bouma.

Old list and unupdated isn't it?

Yeah the list is old.
Bouma would obviously be ahead of them now. I think I'd have Gaelan Patterson ahead of that group too. He was injured a good chunk of the year but he played soidly when he was healthy - seems to have a similar game to Bouma.

Here's a fun fact...
HF is a terrible site for anything resembling accurate Flames information.

I'm in the process of putting together a list for The Hockey Writers for our gradual run-up to the draft. Spoiler: I believe I have Nemisz, Stone and Bouma ranked roughly together (with Nemisz slightly ahead) and the only forward I "rank" ahead of those three is Ryan Howse. Although, my process isn't about the "best" players, but rather those whose performance at their current level has made them most deserving of promotion to a higher level.

Stone is a 26 year old UFA; I think he has graduated from the ranks of 'prospect' to 'journeyman'

If he wasn't injured he'd likely still be playing in the NHL for the oilers. As it is, he might be a 4th liner for the flames next year if his strength is back. If he doesn't make the NHL next year, he should definately be considered an AHL Journeyman.

Stone was also one of the more impressive guys down the stretch for Abbotsford, and all the press were pleased that he showed off some scoring touch during the game in Calgary. I'll concede he does seem to have limited upside given his injury history and age, but he can definitely crack an NHL roster next season.

I use to read HF Boards, but I don't much anymore. I really question their credibility. Who scouts/works for them? It's not to say I don't think they know what they are talking about, but how do they supposedly know so much about each team's top prospects?
It's a great idea for a website, but I don't trust their rankings.

I'm almost certain that HF started off as a fan site ran by Oiler fans who wanted to compare their prospects to those from other teams. They tried to promote it as a neutral site, but it wasn't.... and it still isn't.
