I hate myself for knowing this but anonymous (4chan) has something to do with it.

This is seriously the dumbest thing ever. I want to play MK Online.

What the eff is the point of an attack like this? Oooo big bad Sony you give us free online and a bunch of e-tard nerds eff it all up because of the change in OS lock or something.

It's like being mad at the NHL so you kidnap all the teams so they can't play. EVERYONE LOSES. Piss off hackers

The only reason 'anon' is so anonymous, is because if they ever showed their faces they would be laughed of the face of the earth. They are the ultimate example of "internet tough guy" syndrome.

Playstation Network. It hosts all the online play for the PS3. It was a free network provided by Sony.

Anonymous is everybody and nobody. And that is a scary reality.

These are people that can f--k with the government and get away with it because they're just that good.

Do any of these badass hackers ever get busted? I suppose that the badge of honour in that field is freedom, just like anything else. I'm kind of impressed that these guys can go f***ing with major sites and not end up in jail. I guess it must be bittersweet to be so good at something and never receive any kind of compensation or recognition for your accomplishments.

There was a security company that was working on finding the leaders and were about to make an announcement when Anonymous responded by hacking the security company itself and releasing all kinds of emails and private documents.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/n...d-the-hive.ars

I'd say most of Anonymous' "hackers" are just kids who know enough about proxies and have installed someone else's tool for carrying out DDoS attacks. But there are clearly a couple of quality hackers in their group that know what they are doing.

As an aside - some of the comments from Anonymous in CMPunk's link are appropriate to this thread. Yeah, it sucks that you can't play a couple games online atm, but if you're in a rage over it, maybe it is time to turn the computer off and go outside.

The first comment after the blackout started reads, "There are things that go beyond your personal pleasure ... you may not be able to enjoy things because of our actions but it is for a greater cause." And other, later posts include lines like "Take a break from online gaming for a while," and "maybe it's time you put your mind to productive use."

As for the question of why Anonymous would want to sabotage the network: It could be fallout from the time Sony sued somebody for making it easier to sabotage that very same network. On April 4, Destructoid reported that Sony and George "GeoHot" Hotz (the guy who first unlocked the iPhone) had settled out of court after Sony sued Hotz for hacking into the Playstation Network in early 2010. In retaliation, Anonymous reportedly promised "the biggest attack you have ever witnessed, Anonymous style," against Sony. That was to take place April 16, and was apparently a bust. Despite Anonymous's official protestations, it could be that the current blackout is an effect of the group finally getting some traction with "Operation Sony."

The recognition is within the scene itself, they don't care for public recognition. It's all about proving your talents and on one-upping each other individually or between the groups.

Freedom is really what they are after, the freedom to do whatever they want with the hardware they buy and that may be a reason for this because they seemed to dislike Sony being militant about shutting down alternative uses for the PS3.
