Does Green Bay have problems signing free agents? How about Oakland? Are those world class cities? Yes I know Oakland is close to San Fran and LA and San Jose but the point stands.
Is Winnipeg ideal over Montreal or New York? No. Is it all that different from Edmonton and Calgary? Hell no.

If NYI decided to be a cap team, I think a lot of free agents would line up to play for them. Of course, I can't prove it... but I believe that. The only reason they don't now is because they know NYI won't pay for a winner.
Edmonton was/is a cap team and still had to overpay or find players that were out of options before they would sign there.

I actually read that Doan has a house in Kamloops or Kelowna like Jarome and lives there or in Alberta on a ranch with horses during the summer instead of Phoenix.

I was going to say something along these lines. As much fun as it is to poke fun at Edmonton and say that no one would ever want to go to that city, I think players are more turned away from the Oiler's management (Lowe) than from the city.
If the new Jets team is a well run organization that treats its players well then they will be able to sign free agents who are willing to be a part of a well run team even if it is located in a somewhat undesirable location.

Huh? You're saying Hulsizer was running the game last night even though he doesn't own the team and was in Chicago? I don't think so.

No it doesn't.
You're comparing Winnipeg with Green Bay and Oakland!!?? That is pure gold. All else aside, Green Bay is a legendary franchise, one of the most respected and winningest in NFL history...and you're trying to compare them to the Jets, a team that has never won, didn't have enough fan support to keep their team the first time and a team that has no league wide legacy (quite the opposite with the Pack)? Yeah, that makes sense...
With regards to Oakland, what you're not seeming to realize is that WEATHER makes a HUGE impact for any player deciding on where to play (especially for those with a wife and kids). People can escape bad neighbourhoods, they cannot escape bad weather. There are alot of areas in Oakland that are very high end and extremely nice, areas where you never ever see the cities poverty, do you think everyone living there is a crack head or a gang member?
On top of all of that, Oakland is next to the ocean, San Fran, San Jose and a short drive to LA. Green Bay is next to Milwaukee and Chicago, Lake Michigan and is about 600 KM's (more?) south of Winnipeg. Worst comparisons ever.

Edmonton and Calgary are both superior cities to Winnipeg IMO, being close to the Rocky Mountains alone is something Winnipeg cannot come close to offering. I will agree though TO and Montreal will be destinations over Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg everyday of the week and twice on Sundays.

Is that right? So back when they were a good team they signed alot of big name free agents? Here is a list of every player they have ever signed, you dive in there and report back with all the big name stars they've signed in the past 32 years.

Islanders spent 53 million to the cap. Sounds like they're willing to spend money to me.

Most players spend about 1/3rd of their lives in the city they play in, the other 2/3rds is on the road or at their offseason place, I think 'the city' means very little to players, the organization means everything.
The Canucks spent many years not being able to attract free agents but it was because the team was cheap and badly run, Vancouver itself is likely one of the best cities to live in in the league and always has been. That said Loungo still 'lives' in Florida and just keeps a place in BC for the season, on top of that he attends goalie camp in the summer in Ontario I believe.
Hockey players are very well paid nomads, I doubt very many would mind Winnipeg anymore than Columbus or Minny.

Where did you get that?
Cap Geek has them at ~$40 million - dead last in the league.

You clearly dont understand the pull family has, the vast majority of women and childern want to be warm and close to family attractions - Winnipeg will, in turn, be one of the league's worst options for the aformentioned things.
If you think the "city means very little", I think you're dead wrong.

Oh fair enough flames I read the page wrong, capgeek has a much clearer spreadsheet. I guess the only way to tell how Winnipeg will do when it comes to free agency is wait for them to be in the league. Until then it's all speculation without much worth, on either side

No its not. I don't know why Vancouverites always walk out this talking point. Yes, Vancouver scores high on livability surveys. These surveys don't cater to the interests of multimillionaires however.
Multimillionaires are much better off living in warmer American cities with cheaper taxes, private healthcare, and a better travel schedule.
Vancouver wouldn't even be top ten in the NHL based on solely the city.

And paying essentially an inactive player (the one with the 15 year deal)...

Small point, but Oakland is not a short drive to LA. That's like saying Winnipeg is a short drive to Toronto. Its a good 7-8 hours. San Jose actually kind of sucks in a lot of areas, I know a few SF 49ers live in Santa Clara. I'm told a few SJ Sharks players live in Saratoga or Los Gatos. I'd imagine most of those pro athletes stay in Menlo Park.

Then I guess I am an awesome driver as Ive done it in slightly over 5, which in the grand scheme of things is a pretty short drive.
And I am guessing you've never driven Winnipeg to TO? The only way a guy could do it in 8 hours would be with a boat-car combo - that is like a 22 hour drive dude - in fact took me over 24 when I did it.

From where to where? Which highway? San Jose to LA, or Oakland to LA? Just to the border of LA? What kind of traffic, or in the middle of the night?
Because that makes a big difference, ya know...
I've never heard of anyone that lives in LA and commutes to the Bay area for work. Some weekends, but thats it. The most ridiculous I've heard is Sacramento.

Yep, Calgary is closer to Winnipeg than Toronto and that's a 12-14 hour drive. Toronto is about 900km further.
