It isn't it just isn't a good choice, it is, in the current US economy, the only choice if you have to move the team in a month.

Given 2 or 3 years they could come up with a few better options (Quebec mostly)

The move to Winnipeg is a startling indictment of Bettemans poor management of the situation, he should have seen this coming 4 years ago and cultivated a back up market, and then pulled the plug on Phoenix last year, instead he has been so single minded in his attempt to keep the Yotes where they are he has left himself with no options but the Peg or Ballsilie.

can you provide some more detail on how you feel that Quebec City is a better choice than Wpg?

Am I wrong or is there more corporate head offices etc in Wpg vs QC? also Wpg has a larger population to draw from (I think).

Who knows when/if this rink in QC will be built - and at what cost to those buuilding it.......

other than Jim Peplinski (Renfew Ont) and Fluery (Oxbow, SK) who has played in Calgary that was born outside of Alberta that stayed on in Calgary after NHL pay checks stopped rolling in?

Off the top of my head Jamie Macoun - and god knows there are alot more then that if someone wanted to look into it.

And please, don't try and compare Calgary with Winnipeg, they're really not very comparable at all.

while Quebec isn't bigger than the Peg it can at least draw from the surrounding area including Trois River, it will even get some fans driving up from Montreal I'd guess. Its population is mostly goverment employed therefore virtually recession proof. I'm not saying it will work, but it could work there.

The whole notion that QC is a better market than the Peg is laughable. You think Winnipeg will have a tuff time attracting players? Now ask them to move to a city with a similar climate but higher taxes and where EVERYONE speaks french. QC isn't Montreal people.

The point is either Quebec City or Winnipeg is a better choice than Phoenix. Lets say Winnipeg stays in the black for 3 years, then they start to slip into the red and have to take from the revenue sharing pool. THey are ahead over $120 Million Dollars (3 years at a loss of $40 mill for Phoenix) and in their 4th year, there is no way they will come close to losing $40 million. I would estimate at the most $10 million.

It is clearly at better economic choice for the NHL owners. 1 less team that they have to share revenue with (at least for 3 years)

What has been lost in this conversation, is the Red Headed Step Child Atlanta. They are very close to moving as well, but no one is talking about them. There is a slight possibility that Quebec and Winnipeg have NHL teams next year.

Maybe it's just me, but if I were an NHL'er I'd rather play in a hockey market where the atmosphere is electric, hockey is wildly popular and the intensity only forces you to up your game.

And I'm not even a fan of Winnipeg as a city.

And the whole weather thing is laughable; move to Phoenix when you're retired. Play in Winnipeg, or any place that embraces hockey, for a way more exciting career. That's just the way I see it anyways.

according to the news article i read today - yotes GM Maloney states "we all know hockey can work in phoenix" - so it would appear to me that this whole discussion may be moot.

i should also note that by work - i am assuming that he means in the same fashion that a 1972 amc gremlin would work......

It's one thing for a player to want to play in a big-time hockey market and be mobbed everywhere he goes. It's a lot different when he has a wife who's sitting at home during those long road trips in January, or standing idly by while her husband is mobbed everywhere he goes.


I was reading a story the other day about one of Gretzky's kids, who's a top baseball prospect who has already accepted a scholarship to play college ball in San Diego, and is now waiting to find out how high he'll go in the MLB draft. In the story he talks about how different it is to see how his dad is treated in Canada versus the States. Here, he can't go anywhere without being recognized, there, he's just another kid's dad (it also helps that he goes to the same school as Will Smith's kid).
