I just had to call Shaw again about some slow internet. I had joyfully forgotten the hold music they have. There is nothing as painful as 15 minutes of staticy and loud Music Box dancer piercing your soul.
I'm a Shaw customer and I just switched my plan to the new personalizer plan and I immediately regret it. I obviously didn't look close enough at what channels I would be getting and to get back to what I had before would cost me more money. Beware switching to this plan. It's terrible IMO.
On the TV front I had basic cable (2-22 and some other random channels) and HD basic (the first 13 or so HD channels). Now my HD selection is worse (same amount of channels but worse channels IMO) and I lost TSN in SD. I might try phoning them and try to switch back or I'll seriously think of switching to Telus.
Doesn't matter who I am with, but I hate paying so much for TV/phone/internet.

If you compare the available packages to customize with between Shaw and Telus, you're likely to run into the same situation. I switched to the plan personalizer and got the base package + Sports 1 (TSN/Sportsnet) + Entertainment 1 (NatGeo, Discovery, Space, etc) - Phone - Extreme Internet. I'm paying less and only losing two channels we used regularly (OLN and TLC, the latter I think my girlfriend only used to watch Say Yes to the Dress and Hoarders).
When I looked at what packages I would need from Telus to get the same experience, it would cost more. They put some channels that are grouped together with Shaw into separate packages, which was the deal breaker for me. Getting temporary discounts is nice, but not great in the long run.
Thanks for pointing out the Shaw Personalizer thing. I think this will actually save us some money since it's been quite a while since we looked at our subscriptions.
I didn't look too hard but does anyone know how the Shaw theme packs work with HD? If I get the sports package, will I get the TSN in SD and HD?
When the package shows the channel icon with HD, it also includes the SD channel. The price I guess reflects getting both versions, which could be a downside to some if they don't want HD.

Or you could have just used the call back feature.
Thursday is the day the Telus installer comes, I call tomorrow to cancel Shaw Internet and Rogers cell phone.

I called and chopped SD channels 23 and up and I'm getting all the HD stations (minus movie channels) for the same price as if I used the personalizer and only got the sports theme pack.
Boo-urns shaw. Hopefully I get to keep my current setup.
I'm getting really tired of paying a ridiculous amount of money for a bunch of channels I don't use. I'm frankly on the verge of cancelling my cable and phone and switching to an independent company for internet. I watch a grand total of 8 different channels - ever - and there is absolutely no way to get those channels without paying for 150 that never see the light of day.
I checked out the "personalize" option on Shaw's site; what a bunch of garbage. I'm supposed to feel like I'm getting a good deal because I now have to pay even more to get the two packages that contain one channel each I want? Wow! Only $10 a month so I can watch hockey on TSN in HD? Where do I sign up!?
And now rather than deliver real options to consumers, the big broadcasting companies are pressing the CRTC to declare Netflix and their ilk as broadcasters so they can squeeze them out of the market. Add in their attempts to use the CRTC to push their version of UBB, and they may manage to kill their ISP competition as well. Reasonable pricing and on-demand selection are scary concepts to companies like Telus and Shaw.
My special Shaw pricing from last time I called to politely point out the insane amount of money I pay for their services ends in October. I would switch to Telus, but it's just more of the same overpriced garbage. An institutionalized duopoly and a demonstrated willingness to use overbearing regulation rather than actual good service is a terrible model for building customer loyalty.
Can you tell I'm irritated?

Completely agree CBL. It's crap. I pay for a ton of SD channels I never, ever watch.
And while I don't sub to Netflix currently, I like the fact there are options. Canada needs MORE options, not less. The big sat and cable companies can go jump as far as I'm concerned.
I've been with Shaw forever and my special pricing is over in a few months as well. I plan on calling and complaining again, but if Telus isn't offering amazing incentives to switch anymore, then I can see complaints falling on deaf ears this time around at Shaw.

It's already too late from what I could tell. Maybe you'll get luckier than me though, who knows. The guy I had on the phone was pretty no nonsense and wasn't interested in talking.
Well it is that time of year special pricing promo is ending what is everyone's action plan? I am thinking I am going to cancel everything and have my wife sign up for just internet and then put a slingbox at my parents house so I can watch hockey games.
