I still think the Winnipeg Jets of Manitoba was the best choice for a name.
Should have just been the Winnipeg Jets, I really don't think having the name as Manitoba will provide more support from around the province, and if that is needed to generate more fan support going back there might not be such a great idea.

It was on the gold standard until April 10, 1933 rendering 1900 to 1933 data useless. At the outbreak of the second world war it was fixed at a rate of 1.1 to 1 US and then adjusted to a fixed rate of 1 to 1 until 1950, thus rendering data from August 1939 to 1950 useless. Let's also consider why they pegged it in 1962 again (Because the bottom fell out of the currency when the Diefenbaker government fell and there was a need for price stability)
So in summary, valid data:
April 10, 1933 to August 31, 1939
1950-1962
1970-present
I would venture a guess that the average isn't 0.98. The last 5 years data doesn't average 0.98 either. You cannot use pegged rates as historical comparisons because it isn't viable for the Bank of Canada to peg exchange rates anymore. It's beyond their control and their will to do it in a lot of ways. In fact if you've been reading the Bank of Canada's news releases the past few meetings, you would see that the dollar being this high is actually a huge concern of theirs as it renders a lot of our non-commodity industries uncompetitive with their American counterparts. Meaning in their perfect world, they would prefer a lower Canadian dollar.
I would be utterly shocked if Thomson's / True North's modelling of the transaction didn't have a low case dollar scenario built in. I'm not saying the dollar is immenently going to drop like a rock, in fact I believe in parody and above for the next few years. I just really don't like the dismissive attitude that gets taken on here about the dollar being a non-issue for the long term when in fact it is still a large concern.

So I haven't been around for a while. How much did SCH end up donating to CP when it was all said and done? Last time I was on he got hit for the first hundred cause of time line, but still arguing that the deal was done for Phoenix.
As far as the dollar goes, witht he way the US economy is going, and the fact that Canada has one of the most stable in the world, I really doubt we'll dip below 85 cents US in the next 30 years. Though I agree, it is good to have plans in place.

Well the CAD dollar is not going to increase in a linear fashion with the price of oil after parity because the Bank of Canada and other market factors do not want the dollar rising that high. That is why you see it tapering off.

Agreed, it'll taper off, but it'll stay within 90 and 1.10 for a long long time I'm thinking. Economists and speculators are already predicting 1.09 by summer.
The world economy has changed.

Not that this alone makes small market canadian cities viable, but the dollar isn't going to kill them.

The good ol' 1982 -91 Smythe division all over again. Can't wait. Looking forward to some intense rivalries. Well Minnesota instead of LA, but close enough.

That's all for now.

Or they could be be the Winnipeg Jets (or Manitoba Moose) but have a Red Lobster on their jerseys anyway. Much like the mighty orca on the Vancouver jersey.

You don't need to be a genuis to know the US is in deep, deep economic trouble and its outlook isn't going to improve much for a long long time.

True - but there's a lot of very smart, very skilled people who get paid a lot of money to try and model FX markets. It's not exactly the easiest thing in the world to forecast. That was more my point.

Right. At the same time that is announced, a swarm of pigs will fly over downtown Glendale. They will then land and build a snowman in front of the Jobing.com Arena.
And hopefully you'll learn not to smoke so much crack before posting. The Coyotes are all but finished.

$100. I said the bonds would be sold by the end of that week and they weren't. And they still aren't. Simply amazing how long this thing has dragged on.

They are trying to precisely model unpredictable exchange fluctuations on a daily or weekly basis though, making a long term unprecise prediction that the loonie will continue to rise against a US doller that is being held up by not much more than its reserve status right now is not that tough.

Are you one of those guys who's been sitting on the sidelines talking like that while the USA stock market has gone up 100% in the last two years?

I agree. I can't speak for the rest of Manitoba but here people really don't care whether the team is Winnipeg or Manitoba. Them being able to see NHL hockey again is all that matters. I know of people who are talking about getting a group of three or four people together and buying a season ticket.

Are these the Coyotes' final games in Phoenix?
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle1989809/
Finding the truth in the Coyotes' troubled ownership situation is extremely difficult these days, but many knowledgeable people in the NHL community have been saying for weeks that the league's deal with Matthew Hulsizer is dead and that it will take an 11th hour miracle to keep the team in the desert.
Others believe it's inevitable that Winnipeg gets an NHL franchise back at some point given all of the legwork done by Mark Chipman.
(That team could even be the Atlanta Thrashers rather than the Coyotes, depending on what happens in the desert in the next few weeks.)
For now, no one knows. But that day's coming very soon.

Defiance, denial mark Coyotes last stand
GM: Hockey works in Arizona
http://www.winnipegsun.com/2011/04/1...tes-last-stand
"We know hockey works in Arizona," GM Don Maloney told the Republic. "We have to prove it."
And there's denial, still front and centre in some corners, where the threat of relocation is nothing but the product of vivid imaginations from the Great Reviled North.
"Teams don't move to Canada -- they escape its icy bowels," wrote Cory Williams at Arizona.sbnation.com, calling the Winnipeg conjecture "poor sportsmanship from desperate Canadian hockey fans."
reader comment:
My buddy was at the game last night. 4 playoff tickets at $39.00 ea??!!! So, hockey is working in AZ?
