Atmosphere is always more playful on your mind than forced surprises. That's why I look at Minecraft like Metroid games. The atmosphere is creepier than the things inside it.
Found this game the other day and played the hell out of it until I found out gold, redstone and the aqua gems were all useless and that Iron and Diamond were the only things worth mining.. kinda killed the game for me

Redstone is not useless!
Just built my daughter a modest minecart roller coaster today that took about one stack of redstone. (well it actually took more, but I used some redstone torches as decoration, so that doesn't really count.

None the less I was saving up lots of Gold and made an Army of Pickaxes and other tools thinking they would be better than iron tools. Tried one out and the pick was done after like 15 blocks.

Yeah.
Gold has some planned uses, but right now it is kinda useless. It is used as currency on a few servers from what I have seen (those that don't use iConomy that is).
On a related note, I think the real gem of this game, that will make it persist for me is the custom server mod options ( I am using bukkit for mine). Some have Achivement/reward systems, RPG/Questing/levelling systems (including some Everquest and Runecraft mods), shops backed by a server economy, towns, multiworld support, so you can log into your server and build really cool stuff without the hassle of dying, then easily move to nether or smp for a challenge. (See a full list of plugins here)
As a sys admin, I seem to get a kick out of running my own server, just for my family. Always trying out new mods so my daughter has more fun. Just yesterday I installed Minecart Mania, which adds some really easy to build options, rather than some of the complex, hard to use options that are available in Vanilla.

That is funny, because before 1.4, I was having lots of problems on my laptops, but since then they both have been working flawlessly.
Any of you play on public servers? I started a couple weeks ago, so I didn't have the absolute power of admin that I had on my server, because it was corrupting my game play fun. Started on minecraftoolbox.com when I don't want to play survival and it has been a blast.

I get the stupid black screen of death too often in the new patch.
I have a 50% chance of getting that whenever I step in water. It's bad enough that I've stopped building in or near water.

I have too much time invested in the multiplayer server I play on to consider moving to a new server right now. The admin is starting to get uninterested though so we'll see what happens. I can see him abandoning the thing in the next 6 months.
How do you make mob traps? Or even just a room that spawns mobs, my kid is always wanting to find slimes and they're hard to find.
I think best way to find slime is going as deep as you can, so close to bedrock. what I do is I use F3 to find them. They have a distinct repetitive hopping motion, unlike the other mobs where the only hop a few times and stop.
I think 1.4 actually made slime a lot easlier to find. I've found more than a dozen since 1.4 came out.
The easiest mob trap with minimal effort is to build a 34x34 trap. 2 blocks for canals, 2 blocks deep so they can't hop back out. 3 blocks high for the spawning pads with 4 pads. My trap is about twice as big and I get about 1500 drops/hr. Not completely efficient, but that's because I didn't light up all the caves underground too. I think I can hit 2000 drops/hr if I put a bit of effort into it.
Anyone playing 1.5_01 should be aware, hostile mobs can spawn anywhere now during a rain storm. I got the crap scared out of me when a skeleton started shooting arrows at me in my hallway.
I was confused at first cause the hallway is insanely well lit up with a constant lava stream flowing through it through my glass ceiling, so I shoud not be getting any sort of spawns happening. It's happened to me twice already. Turns out, light level doesn't matter during a storm. Everything will spawn anywhere anytime.
Went on minecraftforum and the users confirm this is the case. Pretty freaky...also adds another element to the game. You're not safe during a storm.
I should note it only seems to happen when there's thunder and lighting. Normal rain doesn't produce spawns.
I stumbled onto the minecrafttoolbox server and Rathji was there as an Admin. If you like to play (or don't know a lot like me) that's a great server, and Rathji is very helpful.
