Default Mechanical help

This is for a young friend. My car is newer.

My friend's truck started leaking coolant. He took it in and was told the timing gasket was shot and that it would cost almost $1,000. It's an old truck with 215K, so not worth it.

Two days later it wouldn't start. It won't turn over, at all. There's power to it as the lights and radio work. It won't start even with a boost.

Anyone here have any idea how he can at least start it to use it as a trade in? Maybe it's something minor and he can get it going?

It has relatively new tires and battery so he's thinking he might part it out. What's the best way to do that? I'm thinking he could always keep the battery, keep it indoors and charged and use it in another vehicle.

Any advice is appreciated. he doesn't have much money so his options are limited.

Does it make any noises when he tries to start it? Could be the alternator.

Try tapping the starter with a hammer while someone tries starting it.

What kind of truck is it? What are the 'no start' symptoms? Does it crank over and not start, Does the starter spin but not engage, does it click and not turn over, does absolutely nothing happen when you try to turn it over?

if you are having trouble with coolant leaks you could have an internal vapor lock.

Possibly ran out of coolant and siezed the engine. There will be power to everything but the starter will click.

It's a 2000 XL Ranger. As for the symptoms asked above, I don't know. I'm guessing the starter clicks but can't say for sure. I can ask these questions and get back. Thanks for the good posts thus far.

Personally I'd say a 2000 Ranger with 215k on it is worth fixing for $1000...

This does not look like fun to replace.
