Good point - I just think it's odd positioning for a mainstream retail part. Maybe I'm off here but I think the vast majority of retail SSD purchases are made by performance enthusiasts, who are going to choose an SSD based primarily on benchmarks. They're going to have to come in at a significantly lower price point than everything else this generation to sell very many.

Review of the new Vertex 3 120GB, doesn't do as well as the larger 240GB, that's the interesting "feature" in this generation, because of the way the # of channels and the # of chips work out, smaller drives actually perform worse.

Lots of interesting info in this one, including Anand going to bat against OCZ for consumers over some questionable actions by OCZ.

Yeah, I read somewhere that they had switched up the chips on their Vertex 2 drive (or something like that), and a lot of people were getting under-performing drives as a result.

I have a 120GB Vertex 3 pre-ordered with NCIX, but they keep bumping the ship date all over the place. Nobody has a clue when these things are going to finally ship (from NCIX).

I wonder if I should skip out on OCZ and go with a more reputable company like Intel or Crucial...

Not really OCZ's fault alone, SandForce is a small company and some issues cropped up in validation (which SandForce depends on OCZ and OCW and Patriot and the rest to help with), so the delivery date got pushed back as they fixed and validated those.

Intel will give the best reliability for sure, and it looks like the performance picture for 120GB drives isn't as clear cut as it is for the larger ones. I'd probably wait until some smaller Intel and Crucial drives get compared to the Vertex 3 before deciding if absolute max performance is the primary desire.

The speed difference between the 120GB and the 240GB models is very disappointing. I can only hope that the retail price might reflect this but it likely won't.

Still, the Vertex 3's should be faster than anything out there at the moment. What are the upcoming or current alternatives?

I need an SSD soon for the new laptop I purchased without an OS. I might as well not waste my time until I get an SSD for it.

Crucial just released their C400s but from what I've read the performance isn't much better than the C300. The C300 is a very high-performance drive though, so that's not necessarily a bad thing. It just doesn't benchmark as high as the Vertex 3. I haven't used either of them yet but I doubt there'd be much of a perceived performance difference.

Newegg.ca has the 120GB OCZs in stock right now, but you have to move quick. I saw them in stock yesterday, but by the time I added it to my cart they were sold out again.

I ordered one now though! Screw NCIX. I pre-ordered with them 3 weeks ago, and I still got one faster just by checking Newegg's stock level and ordering it from their site.

How are most of you guys using your SSD? Do you install your OS on the SSD or do you run your media/game files off the SSD?

OS.

They're way too expensive to use as media storage ($300 for 120GB), and the performance increase you gain from watching a movie off an SSD is minimal at best.

SSDs are all about reading lots of things at a very fast rate. Operating systems and day-to-day applications are what they're all about.

Yeah I've just got my OS and my main work stuff and applications and a few primary games on the SSD, and a huge regular drive to hold music and videos and to install large but not often used apps and games to.

I've got about 8GB free on my 120GB drive.

A few questions, if I replaced a current HDD that is in my laptop, they are the same size so I could just swap it for the SSD right?

Just want to know, because then I'll order one with the laptop rather than buying it after words.

Yes they are the same size. If you order one with a laptop, the price could be better or worse than at retail. Many people just keep the mechanical HDD that comes with their custom ordered laptop for a storage drive.

I ordered my laptop with a 750GB drive but that will be moved to the optical drive bay for storage of media and stuff.

Then I'll buy an SSD at retail for the primary drive when a good one is released or a good sale comes up.

I wouldn't trust a manufacturer with that type of stuff. Chances are they're going to pick the cheapest (read: inferior) SSD they can find, just to say their laptop comes with one.

I'd take the default drive and pick your own SSD. You can typically get a much better quality one for the same price they were going to charge you for the upgrade.
