Which company makes the worst laptop (in your opinion)?
I have an HP HDX16 laptop... and i have to say, its probably the biggest piece of crap in the world. Here are a list of the problems i have had with it in my 2 years of ownership:
-Screen lays on the keyboard which creates micro scratches all over the screen, the lightbar and the face of the laptop. HP says its not their problem and that i would have to pay for a diagnostic (FUUUUUUUUUUUUU)
-Speakers rattle with any sort of base, the keys shake and it feels like the laptop is going to fall apart
- Screen was loose on the hinges after 1 year (crappy build quality), i had to take apart the laptop to screw the damn screen back down... one of the screws was hidden inside the case...
- Screen inverter was coming loose after 1 year, when i took apart the laptop i took the screen off and saw the cable was loose as hell, some silicone and it hasnt been a problem since.
-Fingerprint reader often doesnt work, it just simply acts like it isnt plugged in sometimes (doesnt show up in device manager)
-Wireless card acts the same way as the above fingerprint reader, closing/opening the laptop somehow makes it work...
- The "lightbar" which controls the volume and wireless buttons often acts as if it has a demon in it, turning the volume on and off, my wireless on and off, changing the base, the treble etc...
Overall its just a big piece of crap, i wouldn't ever buy an HP laptop ever again, their customer service is atrocious.
If i ever get a new laptop, its going to be a Sony, Dell, or Toshiba.

Owned 2 HP laptops. For what you get, phenomenal... for how long they last, horrible.
I've had my Thinkpad T61 for 3 close to 4 years now and it's gone without any problems. Only thing now is the fan is a little noisy but with how much I use it and how bad I treat it... it's great. Thing is built like a tank. It's fallen off the table a few times, stepped on, kicked... yeah, it's great.

In the (prefab) PC world, Asus is still the way to go. Toshiba is almost as bad as HP, and that's not a good place to be.

+1, ive only ever heard great things about Toshibas and their quality.
LG is pretty crappy too, we had a laptop that burned out the hard drive, the power inverter, the wireless card twice and the cd drive.
In the first 2 years of ownership it spent a year and a half at LG getting fixed... my dad finally ruined the damn thing trying to fix it himself....It was a bigger piece than mine.

Acer, is the worst by a long shot.
Poor specs, the cheapest components available, lousy driver support, and just generally bad construction.
Even ~$350 they should be ashamed. They aren't even close to adequate for entry-level.

^ Wow. At one time, LG were the only company that warrantied there batteries.
I think there are going to be horror stories about every brand.

There was a time when a Toshiba Satellite Pro was the best value a guy could ask for.
The company doesn't produce at the same level it once did (quality or consistency), but they still make good value machines for sure.

My first laptop was exactly that. The A70. I used it for audio school and it was a beast. It would run ProTools no problem, and it never crashed on stage during a show, even the time I spilled beer all over it. I just kept praying it would last to the end of the set. Once I got it home and cleaned it out, it went another two years!

You should try to qualify between the business and consumer lines.
Makers know that for John Q Public the price is quite often the bottom line and they do everything they can to cut corners and make the price lower. They also know that while price is important, business users need reliability, If a business laptop fails on a business trip or during a presentation, that cost will override any savings.
So when you look at laptops, if "best" is more important than "cheapest", look at the business lines. You may wonder why the same specifications cost a lot more, but when your system still works fine 3 or 4 years down the road you will understand why.

Acer and Asus take top honors for crappiest laptops in my experience (not counting eMachines).
HP is runner up.
Toshiba made the best PC laptop I've ever owned (Tecra 15 or something).

I think for me its just the build quality is horrible... mine just feels like cheap plastic that isnt held together very well. I can just imagine the day im walking somewhere with it and it just falls apart... its a piece.

I have had no issues with my HP after three years now but my Toshiba crapped out when the screen went out after a year and a half.
Granted I did buy what was the top of the line HP at the time.

Acer's Timeline product line are solid machines. I've probably owned and worked extensively on about 20 laptops over my lifetime and my current Acer Timeline 3820TG is possibly the best value out of all of them. Ultraportable, decent LED backlit monitor, good/great graphics chip, 8 hour battery, all for around $600.
Granted, their entry level stuff is crap.
I had one very good and 3 below average Dells.
I had one Asus with an awful, awful display and weighed a ton.
I had one Gateway that was an absolute beast to carry around but it chewed up games for dinner and never once gave me a problem.
Had one Sony Vaio which was a really nice looking machine and performed well but I didn't really think it justified the price at the time.
I've got a buddy at work that swears up and down by Lenovo. I quite like his. It's got an understated design, pretty professional looking, and is apparently a little powerhouse.
Samsung has some very promising looking machines coming out this year. The 9 series looks seeeeexy.
