I think a lot of people who get hit are trying to beat the train, you know, because its so long you'll be waiting forever for it to pass by.

Though the costs would be quite high for such a project now. Probably won't happen for another good 30 years or more.

And by then we will have teleporters and flying cars, so who cares.

Anyone else find it odd that a man loses a leg in a gruesome accident, and yet three-quarters of the story is about how this will inconvenience commuters?

Apparently hard enough that CT felt the need to have a PSA campain on the trains (not sure if they still have them)
They always made me laugh. An ad on the side of the train that said something to the effect of '42 tons of steel travelling towards you at 80 km/h'. (unsure of the numbers). Given the target market can't see a train coming, I doubt they'll see an ad on the side of it...

We don't live by the ocean, so a train is going to be pretty much the largest moving thing you'll encounter on a daily basis. Not only that, but the damn thing is always in the same place, and has big old metal rails that let you know where it's coming from.
That's why I don't have a lot of sympathy for adults who get hit by a train, it's not like the thing should be able to surprise you.
|
Not to mention that putting the line underground would not prevent this type of accident. The only thing that would change is dude would be bleeding in a tunnel rather than bleeding in a street.

Well... its not so much for the safety bit... there's too much congestion downtown as it is and moving it underground would help that a lot. The side effect is it'll be safer overall for pedestrians.

Second line in the article. Fell off the tracks, dragged by the train, city worker found him. If he fell in between cars it's possible the driver never noticed.

Given the location of the accident, and the time of night I will go ahead and agree that the person probably wasn't on the sober train.

There will always be idiots who are unaware of their surroundings regardless of the safety measures in place. The people who are concerned about the safety of the C-train in Calgary should never venture outside of Canada or the USA. They would surely be dead within hours.

uh....have you been to a city where the mass transit system is underground? unless you're really ######ed and step off the platform and into the tunnel itself you don't get hit. although i see that a lot of places are using automatic doors to seal off the tunnel completely until the train doors are open

So my coworker just got in. it took her an hour and 20 minutes to get from Brentwood to North Hill. If this happened at 330am why are there still delays?

I would argue that unless you're really ######ed, you don't get hit by a train regardless of whether it's underground or at grade...
