I forgot to mention I was chatting with my shaw tech rep and he said shaw just got a new pvr box to start testing from the people who make their phone modems forget the name. He says they are incredibly glitchy right now but should offer a great product with awesome hardware once everything gets smoothed out. Also said that Optik like services are still over a year away

Is this referencing PVR controls? If so, there will be a huge push to bring that in very quickly.

From reading this thread and the Shaw v Telus thread, would it be a mistake to purchase the current Motorola PVR right now? My current deal is up and I either purchase the PVR or rent. If the current PVRs will support the new software then great, I'll buy it...otherwise I will wait for these new boxes to come out unless they are a long time coming still.

i'm in sortof the same boat. i like that DLNA is being discussed in the video...but unsure if shaw will disable it or not.

i have been considering buying a used hdpvr on the FS thread and then just using it wherever...

i have no doubt that shaw will catch up to telus when they get to the final real hardware. they may not pass telus...but they should be at least aiming to benchmark telus.

so i'm not so patiently waiting.

edit: i just read the other thread and i definitely won't be buying anything if the ETA looks like May.

I am unsure about how it implements DLNA, since it will need codecs to run video files from the home computer; unless all it might support is pictures. With video playback Shaw and Arris open themselves up to all kind of support calls about videos filetypes not playing properly.

The only thing I'd wonder about is if it will play mkv files..

Exactly what I was thinking

I guess you can run PS3 media server or a similar uPNP media server, but then the interface you get is just a file structure, not very wife friendly. And if it is not wife friendly, might as well not have it.

Frankly Telus would have the edge still with the fact that they run Microsoft Mediaroom which theoretically can support a Windows Media Center tie in.

My wife did not like the interface, she figured it out but didn't enjoy it. The Boxee Box or Windows media Center interface she took to no problem.

Oh sorry she didn't like the looks of it! Typical that a girl needs things to be all pretty and not just functional

Bump for a question...

I swear it used to be possible to disable the front panel buttons in the DCT settings on shaw boxes. Does anyone know if it is possible on the DCX 3400's?
