Default Kayaker meets Shark!

Footage of Basking Shark (second largest shark) and a kayaker in Florida. The kayak is 14 feet long. Amazing.

Beautiful animal, I believe the Basking shark eats plankton (remembering back to my shark obsessed days as a kid).

I've kayaked near dolphins which were roughly the size of my kayak. That was enough to get my nerves tingling; can't imagine getting that close to such a massive animal. Even more insane are the west coast kayakers who paddle into the middle of orca pods

I have heard that surfing in Tofino will get you some run ins with the orca.. that'd be enough to keep me out of the water..

Ha.

So the guy sees the shark and gets out of his kayak and swims towards it?

Times like that no one should help him if the shark does choose to attack.

Off topic: Why would that person film himself running along the dock for 25 seconds and then end the video 30 seconds later just as the shark is approaching the kayaker?

I think that the shark can tell the difference between a 6 foot man and plankton. I'm no scientist though.

I can forgive the guy for having the camera set to record while looking for a proper view of the scene. Why upload that chunk though? The only relevant bit came at the end and even then he stopped recording as the shark approached the kayaker. Was that the last 60 seconds of tape or storage space he had left on the camera?

It just seems like an incredible moment to capture on film and he utterly fails.

Not true. I've surfed next to porpoises many times there though, Seems like at least once a year on Cox bay some Porpoises are playing in the waves when I'm out there.

That's exactly what I was going to write, what a dumba$$. Probably had to get back to her rods that she seems so worried about. C'mon man!

That's a great video. I would have wanted to get into the water with it. Same with the whale! The Disney documentary "Oceans" has some great shots of divers with big animals, like humpbacks and white sharks.

Random fact: basking sharks are partly responsible for claims that white sharks exceed 30 feet. People would see them from the air and assume they are a white shark (white sharks max out around 20 feet).
