I was watching a national Geographic documentary on Chernobyl last night, it was hard to believe how willing and able the Soviets were in throwing away lives.
The firefighters that went out were not informed that the fire they were fighting was in the core. Within hours most of the firefighters went down to radiation sickness.
They sent a unsuited man crawling underneath the vessel to check for leakage of fuel.
When they started building the sarcophagus (sp?) they sent thousands of Soviet soldiers to carry debris and throw it into the pit, they could only work for a total of three minutes and in those three minutes exceeded their life time dosage, most of those soldiers and firefighters died of the after affects, and the videos of the firefighters were disturbing to say the least.
Go socialism! Go Evil!
Sarcasm ON BIG: Obviously the kindly government death panel, errrr not death panel, ummmm... cost effectiveness...sorry too capitalistic.......NEEDS ANALYSIS! was satisfied according to a rigorous pre-determined emergency (OMFG) rubric.

It was interesting, the Soviet General was told that he was going to use the army for this kind of work, and he stated that he knew that those lives were forfeit and that he should fight harder for them, but then he shut his mouth and did it anyways.

Ummmmm////////////
Not goin to happen eh?
Not even in the realm of what HAS HAPPENED (it is over people) in Japan. By next weekend they, Japanese will have settle this.
The whole problem has been
1. Hit by a 9.0 earthquake
2. hit by a tsunami
3. Power out
4. can't get water into the reactors because no power
5. #### hits the fan
6. has been getting water into the reactors.
7. Getting power back and water into the reactors
6and 7 is on going now.
These reactors produce less heat than your oven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw that one as well, it really gets you angry to see people trying to suggest Japan is anything like Chernobyl, especially the fact that it was so close to becoming a massive disaster that would make Europe uninhabitable if they didn't stop that 2nd massive impending explosion.

A lot of bravery and sacrifice by the Russians.
I agree, this isn't close to Chernobyl, but there is a whole other level that people go to when it comes to the words nuclear accident.
With Chernobyl the biggest fear with the melt down was that the molten fuel would burn its way to the water table and that would basically have done it for major cities like Kiev as their water would have been highly radioactive.
The soldiers that were deployed were incredibly brave as were the fire fighters, but they were also lied to by their leaders, they had no idea how bad things were going to get for them.

-Ministry of Defense announced that the Self-Defense Force helicopter measured the surface temperatures of Fukushima Daiichi from the air and found that the temperature of each spent fuel pool is below 100 degrees C.
Unit 1: 58 degrees C;
Unit 2: 35 degrees C;
Unit 3: 62 degrees C;
Unit 4: 42 degrees C;
Unit 5: 24 degrees C;
Unit 6: 25 degrees C. (as of the afternoon on March 20)
Some pretty good news regarding the reactors. This should mean that the steam generation phase is basically all but over (Assuming enough flow to keep the core at about the same temperature).
