I never really understood what people get out of getting a RT that doesn't say anything. Very odd.

I was checking Twitter a little too often, so I gave it up (along with Facebook) for Lent. I do miss getting news quick, but now I'm not looking down at my BB all the time.

Good twitter at five series in the National Post, and an excellent article from Bruce Arthur.

My first cool Twitter experience...tweeted that I was trying out ESET antivirus for the Mac, and a few minutes later I had a reply from the CEO of ESET and we chatted back and forth a bit.

I guess what surprises me about it is that I'd never really thought much about the potential for random, unplanned contact and information exchange between people. I rarely tweet what I'm troubleshooting or working on, but clearly there's a good chance someone else on twitter is doing the same and it opens the door to information exchange, or watching for tweets about topics they are involved in on an ongoing basis.

I know what you mean and had a similar experience. I was in Vancouver this fall and asked no one in particular for directions to something. Within minutes some Vancouver tourism account responded and we had a bit of a back and forth.

The next day, I tweeted about the restaurant I was at and moments later someone from the restaurant was tweeting back.

In both cases, I wouldn't have been impressed if it was a bot responding to certain key words I had typed, but it was clearly a real person on the other end providing helpful information.

They've got some pretty cool technology which monitors internet chatter now (radian6 is one of them) - I know someone posted negative stuff about the company I work for on FB, and within 30 minutes, they had screenshots from the guys profile sent to our HR department.

When the UBB stuff was going down with Shaw, I tweeted about how much over I would have been and what it would have cost me. 5 minutes later a Calgary Herald reporter was calling me asking for an interview. The following day I was quoted in a couple stories.

Twitter -> Website -> Phone Number. I was pretty surprised.

Twitter has also raked me in a decent amount of graphic design and web development work. Probably around 10K worth of jobs I wouldn't have found otherwise. Just through the people I communicate with and them retweeting someone else looking for a designer.

Just curious about something, what's the point in hashtagging? Is that how words "trend"? It kinda confuses me why people do it so much on there, or do it at all for that matter.

Simple answer: yes.

Hashtags allow someone to 'find' your tweets more easily. They just say search the hashtag #firstworldproblems and find your tweet about leaving your coffee mug at home when you're already at the bus stop.

Ok thanks dude. I'm still somewhat confused by it (especially when people hashtag random things like #thatisall, like what does that have to do with anything you've been talking about), but I think I got er. So pretty much a search tool, like tags in a thread here.

They're quite useful though. Tag something as #yyc if you're trying to get some word about something in Calgary, and people will notice it.

The primary confusion around hashtags is that sometimes people use them as an attempt at humour instead of a way to keep things organized (their intended use). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but usually it just muddies up the waters. Of course I'm totally guilty of doing this a few hours ago but it was hilarious.

Speaking of people missing their own RT's, it really bugs me how there's no way for your retweeted posts to show up in your timeline. There's a "my tweets retweeted" section, but it doesn't tell you who retweeted it or how many times (at least my clients don't show that info).

No one retweets you anyway so I wouldn't be too concerned about it. #twitterburnbaby
