Default Nat Gas BBQ Hookup - Who Should I use?

Hi guys,

I bought a natural gas BBQ this weekend and am now looking to get a NG line installed on my deck (I was sick of running out of meat-sering power mid-steak).

I have a NG insert fireplace that backs onto my deck, right where my BBQ is, so it should be relatively easy for them to tee off that?

I know, for a permit, the gas line running from the main line that comes into the house to the fireplace insert would have to have enough volume to power both at the same time, but... I don't give a F*** about that - if I am BBQ'ing, it's too warm for a fireplace, and vice versa. Plus we use the fireplace for 2 minutes 2x a year.

Thanks!

Basically any decent plumber is usually a gasfitter, and vice-versa. Check some of the plumbing recommendation threads, should be a good place to start.

Check with your insurance co too, see if they'll require permits etc. Nothing quite like getting your claim denied when your house essplodes from the cash-under the table gasfitting job.

Its actually not that hard, just thread the pipes together and then test the seals with your typical BBQ lighter.

That may corrode the iron pipe, I'd stick to the lighter.

We used Pete the Plumber and they did all the permits and crap themselves, did a great job too. Cost just under $300 and they said it was one of the more complicated hook-ups so yours shouldn't be any more then that.

Really? when I put an elbow on my NG bbq hookup that's what Atco told me to do to test it. Something about introducing fire to test if there is a leak sounds like an all around bad idea.

Pretty sure being outside will do that anyhow. Plus we're talking lower pressure gas and pretty decent wall thickness pipe.

Hmmm, perhaps your sarcasmeter isn't working. Clearly fire is the best way to test a NG line.

I did it myself and still had to pay $80.00 to some squid to make it legal. He looked at it, signed and tied a tag on it and left in 30 seconds. And you think lawyers are the only crooks.

The inspection is not for somebody like you who knows what they are doing. It is for the people who don't know what they are doing. I know I sleep easier knowing that there is an inspection required for this kind of thing. But then the idiots of the world probably do it without the proper permits. lol

No way man, I once spilt some soapy water on the floor in my kitchen. This was the result...

Call the natural gas company and have them install a hook up. It's what my neighbour did last summer.

Did your neighbour happen to mention the $600.00 charge? That about the price DI wanted two years ago.

She didn't say what she was charged. I'm sure if it was $600 the whole street would have known.

Well, go ahead and phone Direct Energy and ask what they will charge to do it...I'm fairly sure you'll shake your head at your neighbour a little. It's a huge scam, it cost me about $65.00 in parts for 50 feet of tubing and a shut off valve and took me (an amateur) about 45 minutes to tie it in, I only had it certified when I sold the house a year later because I was told I had too. the new house is still not "certified" The day I pay someone $80.00 to drive to my house and sign a tag and say "good job" again is the day I'll rip the thing out.

My mom used Arpi's when she moved, at a cost of about $300. I remember she called me and said she couldn't find the plug-in for her BBQ.

Oh, mom...
